We are trying to figure out where to go this summer for our 2 week trip. We are getting tired of LI Sound and are thinking maybe it's time to head north.

It's been over 15 years since we have been up there. What is there to do?

Decent marina's?

We have two kids, 16 & 13 that we need to keep entertained, what activities are there for kids?

Not adverse to anchoring out, we have a dink.

C'mon, boys and girls, lay some info on me!
 
Mike, what happened to the chesapeak trip?
 
We can't figure out WHERE to go, so I'm exploring all possibilties...

I'm trying to convince Gina that a week in Bowline and a week at Croton would be a fine summer trip!

So you would be taking a trip to the east AND the west. (Side of the river that is!)

If you guys don't give me some real advice, I'm going to go post my question on the WOMB forum!

Mike, sounds great! I have been wanting to get back up there for the last few years as well but schedules and $$$ have not been in the cards at the same time plus the fact that the four of us plus two dogs on the 24'er is just not going to happen!

Anyway, I would be glad to offer to help with some suggestions and to put you in touch with some very nice folks that can help you out up there.

Two full weeks might be a stretch unless you go way up and perhaps into the quaint Quebec countryside - (not a bad idea) and it is deffinately a lot different than the sound but absolutely georgous and part of the charm and attraction of the region is not what there is but what there is not.
 
Mike, if you're in the neighborhood this weekend please come down to my Metro Boat Show in White Plains. The upstate NY tourism bureaus have sent me quite a bit of stuff that might be worth looking at. We figured we'd be altruistic and offer them the display for free, and boy did they take me up on it! I have stuff from:

Saranac Lake Chamber of Commerce
Syracuse NY Chamber of Commerce
Onondaga County
The 1000 Islands
Mystic CT
Mid Lakes Navigation Co.

plus a few more boxes I haven't opened yet and frankly don't know what the hell is in them...

Perhaps you'll find some good ideas for your vacation there...

May I suggest you consider the Erie Canal to Oneida Lake?
Sylvan Beach is at the Eastern end of the lake and they have a neat little amusement park and some darn good restaurants; the Crazy Clam for one. You can dock for free at the northern or southern side of the channel to the lake. In fact, there are quite a few no-charge places along the canal you can tie-up to for the night. The only thing you should be aware of is that most places don't have electrical power. But they sure are QUIET! I believe the Canal will be free again this year and the speed limit is 10 MPH. So your economy will be pretty decent

If you have the time you can take the Oswego Canal up to Lake Ontario. Peg and I did that and had a thoroughly enjoyable trip.

If you want to consider this, let me know and I can give you more info. For reference, the Oneida and Onandaga Indian Nations operate Marinas along the way that had fuel at $1.979 for non-alcolhol 89 Octane last year.

BTW, Rick has informed us that we can have a slip halfway along "C" Dock, which we will be taking.
Soooooo, the "Kernel" and his Mate will be coming home.

Which leads me to another thought; if you consider the Erie Canal trip, we have the Cruising Guide and assorted other bits you can look at and keep if you make the trip. Also, as we will have made the trip from Oneida Lake to PBM, including a side trip to Lake Champlain, we'll have more info pics to share with anyone interested.

LOL, I know I'm pushing the envelope on this one. For one thing, the boating industry is a mess right now, at least here in NY, so I must confess I'm a bit worried about the success of the Show. On the other hand, I've got so much of this free literature I'm dragging around that I hope people will come and take it so it doesn't go to waste. Upstate NY could really use those tourism dollars, so they appreciate our efforts to help 'em get the word out...

I second Bob's post above about the Erie. Its a great trip, and as you probably remember we did that trip just a few years ago. That Cruising Guide is a must as Bob points out - the 3rd edition came out this year and I ordered it from the NY Canal Corp...

Plus, I have plenty of travel brochures about that area at my boat show [:-mischievous]!!! (I'll bet there are some of you that can't wait for Monday so Pete will shut up about this!)
 
Pete, I'll see if I can get over and help lighten your load!

About 17 years ago, we went up through Champlain to Sorel, then down thru the 1000 Islands and over to Toronto. We came back across the lake to Oswego and took the canal to the Erie, then back home.

The trip was gorgeous and I'm sure it is even nicer now, with the improvements along the way.

Oneida Lake sounds interesting, I'll have to look into it more.

I'm jealous of that trip you made, Mike!!!

Lake Oneida is absolutely wonderful. Its a combination of Haverstraw Bay and Lake George, IMHO. And its relatively uncrowded...

Want to take a side trip and really have the whole damn waterway to yourself??? Try the stretch from Onondaga to Cross Lake. Its pretty, there is some great fishing, especially on Cross Lake, and there is NO ONE THERE. We did it in the Glastron right before Labor Day and the place was virtually deserted, except for a few locals and a couple of nice marinas...

Congrats on C Dock, looking forward to seeing you guys again. It wont be long...50 days and counting...
