Lake Champlain questions

Judging from the cold outside (not to mention my numb feet) it seems like it will be forever!!!

The creek and river are well iced over up here now.

Mike it sounds like you know the drill on these routes. Silvan beach was fun, but I can't see the kids having much fun for as long as it takes to get there. We were extremely fortunate the last time we came back it seemed like every place we stopped had something special going on. Timing is everything and ours was great that year but it was by chance.

What about Manesquan or A-city? Fuel is definitely cheaper in Jersey! You also wind up being able to chase blues or fluke.

DAn that is another option. We are thinking of maybe heading south and hitting some inlets on the way to Cape May.

On the way back, we could stop at inlets we skipped on the way down.

Breaking our routine of eastern LI makes planning a lot harder. I'm just burnt out on LI, BI, Montauk, Essex, etc...

Mike,
I thought you were going to Bowline and Croton. Much cheaper in fuel for the boat as well as the jet ski!!!

Dan has a point about the kids getting impatient. Little kids, such as mine, find it a lot easier to enjoy the slow periods on the trip because you can stop a lot and everywhere you go there is a nice, new playground...

On the other hand, if you pick your spots even the Erie can be fun. Crescent Boat Club, for instance, was very nice and we swam right off the boat at the dock. Schenectady has a pool. Some of the towns have places to walk around - Fonda has the race track, St. Johnsville, Ilion and Frankfort are right on the canal so you can walk into town. And if you like fishing the canals (especially the Erie) are fantastic because of all those years when you weren't even allowed to put a line into the water. Once you get to Sylvan Beach, or even proceeding westward on Oneida Lake, there is enough to keep everyone busy. Amusements, food, some nice beaches and lots of scantily clad young women (that's for the Captain, of course [:-mischievous]) ...

But seriously, if done right and with the right frame of mind, the canal is a lot of fun. If done wrong its a miserable trip and a family disaster of "Griswold" proportions...

Pete has it wired. The Canal is a good trip.
Just do it!

Butch,
Thanks for the welcome.
It'll sure be good to be back.

Forgot to but should mention that Oneida Lake has quite a few shallow/rocky spots. Make sure you have the proper navigation information before you do it. Or, simply stay in the well marked Channel between Sylvan Beach and Brewerton.
Whatever you do, DON'T even think about going between the 2 big islands.

lots of scantily clad young women (that's for the Captain, of course ) ..

That could keep my 16 YO happy!

Why not make a beeline to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket?

Your kids would like MV and LOVE Nantucket, surfing, kayaking etc., moma would LOVE them for shopping, and you can check out the whaling museum, superyachts and brew pubs. Pick out the right superyachts, and sign nuptials for your kids. <gg>

Another neat trip is to explore all the little historic towns on Narragansett Bay.

Chris, we have done MV, Nantucket, Hyannis, Cuttyhunk, etc...

One of the fantastic things about my wife is that she is not into shopping - so that is never a consideration when choosing our destinations.

My wife's favorite clothes are all bought at waterfront towns. She does that while I wash, wax and fix the boat at the town dock. She merely refers to me as the "driver". <gg>

And we both know that can be worse.. Sounds like she has you figured out. But that's the price we pay for happy crew eh?
But what I want to know (enquiring minds want to know) is how old is Mike?

Mike who???

Thanks for the info guys, hope to see some of you out on the river!

Hogan,
We made the trip 2 years ago up to Champlain in an 18ft bowrider and a 22ft bowrider. It was a fun trip. I don't know if your kids would find much interesting, but for adults there is no better way to travel than having a couple of Oat Sodas and enjoying the scenary. The one really cool part was anchoring out in front of Ft. Ticonderoga for a night. I have a slideshow of the trip below.

So Mike,
What is the word for vacation? Have you decided yet. It is getting close... Close to splash time that is...

Leaving on July 3, spending first week in Croton, second week in Bowline.

That would be first week in the Westchester Rivera, second week in the Haverstraw Great Salt Pond!
