Blaze destroys six boats west of Stockton (4:50 p.m.) Print this Article Email this Article Text Size: A | A | A By The Record October 08, 2007 7:46 PM
TURNER CUT RESORT –– A midnight blaze sank six boats and spilled diesel fuel into the Delta early today at Turner Cut Resort, officials and witnesses said.
People nearby turned hoses and buckets of water on the fire and maneuvered to save boats by cutting them from a burning dock.
"Ran a hose from a hydrant to the dock," the resort's Gus Bautista said. "Buckets of water here, buckets of water there. We did our best. Unfortunately, we lost it."
No one was injured in the blaze on Turner Cut west of Stockton, officials said. It was reported at 12:38 a.m. to the Stockton Fire Department, which after crossing levee roads arrived about 20 minutes later, Battalion Chief Matt Duaime said. After the dock and boat fires were put out, fuel pooled on top of the water ignited, he said.
It was extinguished about 2 a.m., he said. Its cause remained unknown.

Lots of old boats in that marina. With the wood docks and all those old wood boats, I'm suprised the whole place didn't go up in flames.

Hello Upper --- You should know about TC, since you are next door. The updated Tuesday story reports that some old gaffer said he lost a woodie valued at $200K. The genius newsman failed to provide the boat brand, age or length -- a typical lapse these days by the local paper. Apparently a bucket brigade plus hoses on the dock prevented total disaster. Praise be to the Stockton Fire Department for responding, even though it was out of their area. Luckily they didn't lose a truck on the levee road. By the way did Tiki change its spelling? Used to be "Lagun" in the dinosaur days. --- Warren

Replacement values on the woodies can be unbelievably high. Doesn't mean you can sell one for that much, though.

Hi Warren,

I'm also at Tiki and the spelling is still Lagun as it was in the Dinosaur days. It appears by the picture in the Record.net article, that the fire was out at the end of the docks on the east side of the marina, which probably saved the whole place from going up as the fire could only travel one direction. Luckily no one (including the fire dept personnel) was hurt. That's the second fire in 6 or so months at Tiki and Turner Cut. Had an old woodie go up in I think April on the side of Tiki that shares the levee with TC.

Hmmmm, makes me wonder if there is a firebug around that part of the Delta? What caused the fire in April?

Don't know if I ever heard what the caused the fire back in April. Owners were not on board when it started. It was quickly set free from the dock and pushed out near the tule berm. It was then towed out on Turner Cut where the boat burned to the waterline and sank. Was very sad. The family who owned it were liveaboards and lost everything except the clothes on their backs. Everyone from Tiki and Turner Cut pitched in and got them clothes and all the necessities to start over again. The support was really overwhelming and they were sure appreciative of everything given to them.

We recover two of those wrecks over the last two days. What a mess!

Phil,

You were missed at the Coastside Dinner. I spent some time with Jim Bulger and he said you were tied up with the recovery efforts. Hope you can make it next year!

Upper,
No cause has yet to be determined as far as I know..I doubt they ever will.

Dave,
Thanks, I was all signed up and paid to go and this deal finally worked out that I had to work that day.
