TURNER CUT RESORT –– A midnight blaze sank six boats and spilled diesel fuel into the Delta early today at Turner Cut Resort, officials and witnesses said.
People nearby turned hoses and buckets of water on the fire and maneuvered to save boats by cutting them from a burning dock.
"Ran a hose from a hydrant to the dock," the resort's Gus Bautista said. "Buckets of water here, buckets of water there. We did our best. Unfortunately, we lost it."
No one was injured in the blaze on Turner Cut west of Stockton, officials said. It was reported at 12:38 a.m. to the Stockton Fire Department, which after crossing levee roads arrived about 20 minutes later, Battalion Chief Matt Duaime said. After the dock and boat fires were put out, fuel pooled on top of the water ignited, he said.
It was extinguished about 2 a.m., he said. Its cause remained unknown.
