Moriches Bay

Hi, all. It's been quite a while since I posted. Illness, boat problems, and a move to Westchester have kept me away from boating, but it looks like I'm finally back. Engines have been repaired and surgeon gave me the OK to go boating again. We want to go west tomorrow from Eastport to Fire Island Inlet. What's the latest advice on the Moriches Bay and Coast Guard areas? Can I go straight west or do I have to Take the east cut near the inlet to the west cut? I haven't been able to use the boat for the last three seasons so I'm rusty on the best route. Our son-in-law plotted a course through FI inlet west to get the boat up to Mamaroneck, but he's not familiar with Moriches Bay and its problems. We'll be in our 33' Cruisers which draws about 2.5'. We took the direct route on Sunday. Even though it was about 10:00 in the morning and still relatively low tide, we had no trouble crossing Moriches Bay. Thank you CurrentSea. We went out into the ocean at Fire Island Inlet and arrived in New York Harbor just after 3:30. Strange as it may seem, I had never taken a boat out the ocean in the 60 or so years I've been fishing and boating. We used to drift for fluke in Shinnecock inlet in a rented 18' flat-bottom boat (on incoming tide only) when I was a kid. Now, weaving though the maze of large and small fishing boats drifting and anchored near and in the inlet was a challenge. Crossing by the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island was quite an experience. It was a great day. Family Affair now rests at her dock in New Rochelle. New adventures await. I just need my back to hold up. Smooth sailing, all. Hy
 
The ocean is the best!
I really like just driftng out there on a nice day. Even better if we get a couple of keepers.
New York Harbor is awesome too. Makes you realize just how small your boat can be when you're passing by one of the big boys heading the other way.
 
The various ferries in the harbor are a real challenge. They don't stop for anyone! They also leave quite a wake. I'm heading to the marina later today; My first docking last Sunday was not pretty! Boy, am I rusty. Practice, practice, practice. Hy
 
The ferries are a bit of a pain, but I try to steer around them.
The views are worth it.
Went through there, and up the East River at rush hour Friday morning, and it was smooth as silk.
