Has to have resturant close... pool... need a pool...

Rob

Kingston Town Dock on the right as you enter just past the bridge is excellent. Located right next to several restaurants ranging from Tex-Mex, pub style, chinese, etc. Also a small maritime museum located there as well. Last time there was in 2005 and dockage was $1.50/ft. Just be aware fresh water hookup is on the bulkhead and the pressure in unreal.

Paul

No pool at the town dock,

Try Roundout Yacht Basin. Has a nice pool and snack bar. You can Taxi or dinghy to town for a dining.

Jonathan

I second Roundout. They also have a demolition boat derby on holiday weekends! ;)

Yes that would be the place to stay (RYB) if you want a pool. If you have a dink bring it along and dink over to town. Steal house (lunch only) and Ship to Shore for dinner or lunch, but the Golden Duck (chinese) shut down, as did 23 b'way (damn). The japanese place is not for me. period. Rosita's and Armadillo's are also ok.
If you are coming on a busy kind of holiday weekend like the weekend before the 4th, make reservations early.
By the way, if it is really warm the creek is a good swim also! Don't be suprised to see people jumping in off their boats.

Dave and I did RYB in 2005, nice place..... You doing the Hudson this year?

Walter

Guys,
Thank you much.....

Now i just need to talk the group into going... they want havestraw....

Rob

Dan, what's the problem with Steelhouse for dinner? OK, if he has kids then he will have to go early, then claim to have left his watch back at the men's room, but they have perfectly good food for dinner also. Is it the after dinner show which causes you to say lunch only?

Rob, if you are really adventurous and the wife doesn't mind watching the kids, jump on a freight train just above the marina and haul butt down to Newburgh on the Saturday night you stay in Kingston. You want to jump off at Torches, it will give you plenty of material for good stories. Or get Pete to run you down to my marina in his Glastron, then we'll go over in my boat. Hey, the most the night can cost you is a few hundred thousand in lawyer fees!!!

While I have nothing against Haverstraw it would be a major mistake to end your trip there. Just north of there is the most scenic part of the Hudson. Seems a shame to come so far and stop just shy of the best part of the river!

Use Haverstraw to break up the trip but head north to Kingston. Just my 2 cents worth.

John's right, Rob. Haverstraw is nice but its basically just a big industrial strength marina on a wide stretch of the Hudson. You can see plenty of those without leaving Long Island and save a lot of gas in the process. The 20 or so miles north of Haverstraw are some of the most beautiful cruising waters anywhere. And then, for another 25 miles or so, the river remains beautiful and scenic as you come to Kingston. The Rondout Creek is at least as big a boating Mecca as Haverstraw is, only its spread out over the creek's 3.5 mile length. you will find more food choices in the Rondout than anywhere else on the River. Rondout Yacht Basin has the pool and caters to the big yachts and groups. As you go further up the creek (another 2 miles past RYB) you find small, folksy marinas, swimming holes and places to raft 10 boats across and spend the weekend on the hook. It is a truly wonderful experience up there. I spend my summers at the furthest marina up the creek, called the Anchorage. It doesn't have many services but it does have lots of something you don't see at most marinas - GRASS. As in lawn chairs, tents and barbecues. Oh, and some of the inhabitants probably smoke some, too, but that's another story :)...

Seriously, there are enough different places to stay on the Rondout to satisfy a lot of people. Its a great, if relatively unpublicized, boating destination...

Awesome info.....

Next question is what the distance from havestraw to roundout....

Think its pretty much a done deal..... thanx again...

George, I get into enough trouble on my own.... but i will take ur excurtion under advisement. Just have some bail money handy ....

Rob

Hey Rob,

At Approx 28 -30mph cruise you are looking at about 1:45 to 2 hours and well worth it.
Town docks are great for an overnighter or for the day trip but if you want to spend a few days then go to Rondout.

Easy and very, very enjoyable trip. When you make the turn at Peekskill bay, you will be overwhelmed by the beauty of the Hudson. Roundout is a great place to stay as well. Pool, playground, BBQs, snack bar, taxi to town or dinghy over. There's even a trolley that will take you to town which the kids enjoyed (don't be afraid to call trolley service for a pickup...we learned the hard way). Just stay to the right of the Esopus Lighthouse or you will be mowing the Esopus Meadow (don't ask!) Other than that, plenty of open water.

BTW - ~2hrs ride from Haverstraw Bay us at ~28mph cruising.

Chris you don't know anyone that warns people about that now do you? I mean, no one ever does that do they?

BTW, you could do the trip in 2 hours but it's really a nice area to slow down and enjoy the view, especially from a little north of Haverstraw until you get past West Point. Plus it makes it easier to avoid the floating debris also! We stretched it to about a 4-5 hour ride last year and just relaxed and enjoyed it.

John,
We'd be leaving from merrick.... looks like 5 hr cruise...

The problem with boating with groups is having to deal will all the different issues....

To me its simple ... ITS ALL ABOUT THE JOURNEY .... sadly in my group im the minority....

Ones bitching about fuel, others bitching about the dog needs to be walked....

people suck...

Rob

I've vowed never to be the planner on a group trip again Rob. It's a no win situation and someone always gets ticked off.

Talk about overworked and underpaid!

Do as I do and say, this is what Im doing. If you want to come, Ok Im leaving at said time and will be staying at said place. If you come fine, if not see you when we get back...
