Need a good transient place around kingston

Have to give you that one Chris, I do like having company on the cruise though. This way if Caryl happens to get moody I can have her ride with the other boat...

Rob, you're going to go straight from Merrick to Rondout? That could be a long day, although I guess you could do it in 5 hours if you rushed. 2 things I noticed though last year, once you get around Newburg (sp?) and further north there were several no wake zones where I slowed down. Some of them looked like homemade signs and I didn't really think they were official, but I noticed that the boats in the marinas (especially on the outside docks) took a pretty good beating from the boats that didn't slow down so I didn't want to add to that. Another thing is more than likely you will see some debris (branches mostly, lots of it last year), and in places where it was particularly thick I felt more comfortable slowing down and taking my time. Given that I would allow a little extra time when planning.

BTW, fuel prices at Rondout were the lowest I saw all last year, so it seems to be a good spot to get diesel.

That's why I don't bother with group trips, I'll meet people at spots but don't get into any detailed planning or worrying about following along together. I've done it a couple times and it was okay, but in general I'd rather travel alone.

John

Good observations, John. I'm pretty sure you're right about those No Wake zones north of Newburgh - they're not official, but since we're responsible for our wake and we like to be nice to other boaters its a very good idea to slow way down. Plus they'll be screaming at you over the radio if you don't...

Even with that, its a nice easy trip up the River...

There is that one marina on the East side of the river with a big no wake sign that the state police do issue tickets for people creating a wake. Every time I go thru there someone is getting one. Last time up I had a 40+ searay pass me as I slowed for the no wake. He knocked the heeck out of me as well as the marina. State police where just comming out. Sure was glad to see those blue lights go on that time. Then we heard him call his friend on radio and tell him he was going to be awhile.

Ok another question.....

July 4th ..... Are there fireworks anywhere near roundout ?

I know im a pain i n the a****

Rob

Hey, nobody is a pain in the as- except my wife sometme. If Im correct they have a really nice display in that area but Dan can tell you better since he is there...Oh by the way Im only joking about my wife, she reads this board often....

Yea butch... we got yea... Love her long time right??

Thanx ... emailed rondout for the reservations ... hope we all get in....

Rob

Wow Butch, you keep talking like that and we'll be visiting you at Helen Hayes! Tell Caryl I have some new towels she may want to try out, they make the wax come off easier[:-bunny]

Rob, the fireworks at Rondout are held the week "before" 4th of July, but like Butch said, Dan may know of some other shows there. Remember this year the holiday is on a Wednesday so someplaces are having displays before or after the actual holiday. Poughkeepsie will have a good show on the 4th but its coming back down the river, you'll start to feel like a yo-yo.

Once you go under the I-84 bridges (2) the river is going to get narrow and there are a few marinas, mainly on the east side, which post NO WAKE zones. The one referenced above is the Pirate Boat & Canoe Club. They have a couple of heavy hitters on their member list so they get good coverage. You will pass a rock quarry about 5 miles above the bridge and then the club is about 2 miles farther up; at Poughkeepsie you will go under an auto bridge and then a rail bridge, then about 3 miles up you hit a left bend in the river, as you come out of the bend there is a NO WAKE zone immediately to starboard - Rogers Point - nice club/really good people whose boats get hammered! Another 2/3 miles up is Poughkeepsie Yacht Club to starboard but if you are in the channel you may not even notice it. At this point there is an island in the river, make sure you pass with the island to starboard, although the real danger is ahead, but they already told you about the Lighthouse.

Hope your reservations get filled, its a beautiful spot.

Rob, last year when I emailed them I don't think I got a response. Picked up the phone and everything was taken care of in a few minutes. Not sure if that's typical or not, but you might be better off calling.

John,
All week all i got was the answering machine. Ill call again next week.

Probably because we don't have to put up with Walter!!!!

(Just kidding!)

Rondout has some of the best July 4 fireworks around. You can get slips at the Town Dock which is literally surrounded by fireworks, but you have to stay the whole 3 day weekend. And they usually do them the weekend BEFORE July 4...

Oops, I just noticed that George said that already. I imagine that with 7/4 on a Wed then the event will be 7/1...

Hey George:

"Rogers Point - nice club/really good people whose boats get hammered! "

See, THAT's the problem! They should come to the Anchorage up here on the Rondout, a nice club/really good boats where the PEOPLE get hammered [:-drunk] !!!

Geo you must be talking about new generation rogers pt. We "joined" and paid the initiation fee. When I tried to get involved and blend in all they would do is say 'you ain't no member'. We went to a meeting and they all talked about screwing new members without realizing I was there. One of them tried to warn the others we were there but they kept going on and on.
We left the money behind and moved on. Pro'ly similar sentiment that other folks have shared about places like spm.

Robski
Like what everyone else has said, the only show occurs the weekend before the holiday (normally). The kingston web site has yet to be updated for 2007. Maybe the folks at city hall have not recovered from the new years eve office party? The town dock is sick that weekend. Don't get stuck all the way upstream under the old bridge from what I have heard. Alternatively if you want reservations at RYB then make them now. Stay through monday so you can watch the show since it is on Sunday nite.

Dan, looks like we have had 2 very different experiences. I have been waxing boats there the past 3 season's and they have treated me really good. When I was at Hyde Park I used to go there to get gas rather than at HPM - you know something is wrong when your marina has gas and you go elsewhere! They invited me to join but I didn't want to fight the Hyde Park traffic to get to the boat. And its not like they have this grand place people are knocking the doors down to get in to. Their fuel prices are good and if you are a member you get another 15-20% lower. But like I said, they get hammered by wakes. I saw a woman get dumped walking down the docks because a wake was so rough!

Dan, what do you mean by this?? We used to specifically go there and tie up to the old bridge abutment for the weekend.
