Pete,

Who's to say that it's not a service when I put ads for my left handed, flexible widgets here, because I'm selling them for half off to ROs?

Spam is spam!

Pete, I have to agree, this looks like it is crossing the line into commercial advertising.

Oh well. Didn't think so. But I guess it is. Sorry. If anybody has any advice to share offline regarding how to move a big boat that's outside the realm of my usual work, please feel free to share...

Are there any pitfalls with this Craigs list thing? I am unfamiliar with it but someone on the classifieds section suggested the same thing...

Just be aware of the scams. If the offer sounds too good to be true it is. I got 4 inquiries on my listing and 3 were bogus.

How did you know the bogus ones? Or was it just that the people had no intention of following through on their offer. I assume there's no rating system like Ebay has. What is the advantage of Craigslist versus Ebay or boats.com???

Pete, offers for more than the asking price, offers from countries that are not known for boating, poor grammer, etc...

"Poor grammer" Now wonder why no one ever sells to me... :)

Walter

Those are indicators that the offer is bogus.

Thought so! But part 2 of my question was to find out about the advantages. Honestly I get very intimidated by this Internet sales thing. Which is funny since I bought my last boat on eBay. But in that case the boat was nearby, and I went up to see it and felt comfortable making an offer on it. I knew I was still taking a bit of a chance but felt the risk was relatively low...

I can't understand how someone would buy say, a 33 footer sight unseen that's 500 miles away from them. IMHO the pictures you see NEVER tell a true story about the state of the boat. But I guess people do it...

Pete,

The biggest advantage of CraigsList is that it is free. You can search by area if you want to buy locally or search a wide area for price comparison. I too find the idea squirrelly of someone buying a big ticket item over the internet, but I think it can be used to generate interest so that they'll come and see the boat. I do think that the very best resource for selling a large boat is www.yachtworld.com You have to be a broker to post an ad there, but there are some "internet" brokers that will place an ad for you for a low fixed fee. A friend used such a service and successfully sold his 42' aft cabin motoryacht. Unfortunately, it didn't sell very quickly, but he got his asking price.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the tip, Dave...

Sorry I got so short with you on the other thread. Please go take a look at my last post there - hopefully with 24 hours to clear my head I was able to say something more meaningful and intelligent this time around...

I'm trying Craigslist now with the 330 - never done that before, but we'll see. We have an account with Boats.com (sister site to Yachtworld) so I'll probably try that one too, as soon as I get some useful pics of the boat. We were hoping to avoid all that fuss if we could have found someone right away - this is starting to turn into too much of a "real" brokerage sale, which means (a) its going to take a long time, and (b) we have to charge the guy real money to handle it for him (percentage of sale). Charles (my boss) tells me not to worry about it, but I'm too much of a Nervous Nellie...

Pete, glad to hear you had a good weekend, you deserved it!

Thanks Mike! It was a lot of fun! We blew $800 in 24 hours (half of it GE's money) but what the Hell - it was worth it :) !!!

We sold a 17' travel trailer on Craig's list a few weeks back. It had been sitting in our driveway for about 4 weeks with a for sale sign on it with only one or two inquiries. As soon as I posted on CL, we had eight or nine calls, turned down three lowball offers and sold it for fair market value in three days.

Hmmmm, I'm still waiting for my first call off the Craigslist ad...

Pete,

I'd be curious to see the ad. What area are you considered in Craigslist? I tried Albany, but my east coast geography isn't so good.
