New Ride in home slip after 9 hr run from Btown

Jeff

The 530 owner on the left with the Sat domes got back to me and this was his feedback:
“From my understanding, the original units are good for somewhere between 15-17 years. I have had to replace the Master Stateroom AC and the Pilothouse AC. The new unit in the PH has made a major difference. “ He replace with the same size of 16K
They are based out of Cape Coral FL so Im guessing they’ll have to deal with the same weather you’ll have
BTW, MY AC tech said that when I update the unit I should think of adding a couple more vents as the unit will handle them and it could help a lot

Andy,

On my 410da, I replaced my salon AC a few years ago. I went with the same BTU, but the newer model has a much stronger fan and works much better. I did the install myself - pretty easy with some phone help from the company ensuring I wired it correctly. The new units have nice thick plastic trays, no longer metal trays to rust. If you want to reach out to the guy I go my AC from, let me know and I can dig for the info. Price was good and he was a helpful guy on the phone during the install. My forward unit is original, and as long as it works, I will keep it, but I can’t imagine it lasting much longer.

But, it is a lot easier to cool off my cave, than your pilot house. Once the temp outside climbs to the 90’s and humid, I really like the idea of a nice cool pilot house! That hot humid heat wave we had this year was brutal in the cockpit.

I am interested in how you would go bigger, space wise, and probably more complex, power wise with your current generator. You gotta look at the Larger units constant power needed and the spike when the compressor kicks on. Hopefully, your geni is overkill for the boat or it may be as simpe as, you cant run cook top, oven and microwave when under way with a bigger AC unit. The the question is, does can your fuse panel handle the additional load and also, will you need to run a larger gauge wire to the new ac. Other than that, no problem mon.

I will stay tuned.

My AC Units are 230V and I can move up in size without much/if any wiring issue.
Also some new units have Variable Speed soft-start compressors that keeps loads lower than the old units. I don’t think ill have Gen issues but still not sure I’ll get any AC off the invertor.

So to confess one of my stupid moments, I met a couple of contractors at the boat yesterday to discuss some winter projects & while I was waiting I did some straightening up.
Turns out that I was storing a couple of inflatable life vest over the 2 port AC vents, which blocked a major chunk of the output. I didn’t realize the vents were there! duh!!
I’ll be spending a lot of time this winter crawling around the boat ‘discovering' things

Jeff, My salon AC looks to be original and works so well that you can hang meat in the cabin. But it is loud!
Did your new AC come with some kind of sound shield or dampener?
The forward AC looks original too, but it is very quiet.

Andy,

Come on man, get on your game :). You are my real time 530 boattest.com! #128512;

Appreciate the input, especially from the Florida guy. But, we need to find out if he is a Floridian. I walk into my in-laws house down here and they are wearing sweaters with their thermostat on 81.

John,

No sound shield, but the new unit is definitely quieter. Assuming of course I can hear it over my Norcold frig :).

I will be back up there soon, to bring boat south. If you want to come to boat to check it out, let me know.

Andy, your AC tech is correct. My new Salon AC fan is probably twice as strong as the orginal unit.

Thanks Jeff! I guess it’s probably common for units of that size and era to have loud compressors or maybe it just seems loud because the forward one is so quiet.. The things both cools and heats fantastic and the fan is strong I don’t normally leave it running when we leave the boat for a day or two because once I turn it on it cools the cabin right down.
Good luck with the trip south with the boat. Hope you have great weather.
We got the snot knocked out of us on the ocean coming back from upstate today. Had to go inside at East Rockaway to avoid turning my wife off to boating forever. LOL!
