After a month+ of trying to get a different slip in my overbooked marina I as able to swap slips with someone that was traveling overseas and wanted his boat in the basin. So instead of overlooking Saint Agnes Cemetery this is my new view:

Im hoping ill get to keep it next year as well

Curious, how is the visibility from the pilot house? I ask because I recently looked at a 2002 570 in Fort Pierce, Florida, and I really liked the layout. I think the 530 and 570 are very similar, so I was wondering how the view from the pilot house is.

I have many questions, but maybe I should start a separate thread or go to a Carver forum, although manufacturer dedicated sites tend to be a little bias (I am a CSR member :)).

Jeff,
Ive been dealing with CRS for years.

Visibility from the pilot house is very good with the exception of the stern. That is compared to my last boat, Cruisers 5000 sedan which was also Pilothouse style. The Carver does have a backup Cam but I’m not used to it yet. So I sometimes go up to the bridge when docking. That being said on the 8+hour trip from Bean town we ran from just the lower helm and I loved it. Much better than trying to see threw Essen glass in the rain. Wipers & defogger are great things to have!!

For the most part the 57 is very much like the 53. Beam, draft, bridge clearance are all the same, just 4 ft longer. So although functionally the same, I’m sure the extra space is nice. Ive been spending a bunch of time(& $’s) upgrading some things and slowing digging into the systems.
So ask away- If you get out to Greenport your welcome to tour my boat, all it will cost is maybe a beer ;-)

Coming from a 410da, I have a feeling the 53 is plenty of boat. I may take you up on the tour, if we head east on our boat in next couple of weeks. I want my wife to see your boat! We have looked at some trawlers, but we don’t want a full displacement, 8kt boat (KK), even if we could afford one. Which leads us to a semi-displacement. We want a boat big enough to live on for a few months, avoiding Florida summers. Oh yeah, we are moving to SE Florida. Thanks, Jeff

Jeff

Coming from the 410DA the 530 will seem huge!
Even with small block Cummins or Volvo’s youll be able to cruise in the high teens, some owners say 20+knot with a WOT of 22-24knots- not to shabby for a 50K lb ride. Big blocks will get you 4-5knots more.

Make sure you look into slip space, it seems once you go over 50’ choices slim down- yet I don’t think that would be an issue in SE Florida
Sent you my email & Cell via PM

Andy,

We just completed our move to Florida and I will be bringing my 410da down in a few weeks. We are still considering going bigger, especially if we come north for the summers. With that said, now that you have had time to use your 530, what do you think, good and bad? My one concern Is, how is it to work on? Access to filters, pumps, impellers, batteries, etc. how is she to dock?

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff

Working backwards,
Docking- as long as the slip is sized properly I’ve had no issues. Just to be clear with my first slip I got in & out of it with no problem- but it was May and there were very few boats in other slips. After the marina filled up I didn’t have enough length in front of me to get into the slip without major help. No problems with other slips and my new slip is a dream. More then happy to give details

Now, I had my 50’ Cruisers for over 10 years and could thread a needle with it, yet under the same circumstances it would have been a no go also.

Also as I like to run the boat from the lower helm so I’ve taken most of the canvas off the bridge which I’m sure cuts down on some windage issues. I have covers for all the bridge seating as well as for the helm. Also have a boot for the Bimini when I fold it up.

Im still not 100% comfortable with using the rearview Cam when docking so depending on the slip I’ll dock from the bridge.

So as of now I’m not single handling the boat like I did my Cruisers but expect to next year

Access to filters, pumps, impellers, batteries, etc.:

So far access seems very good for most maintenance items outside of the engine stuff. Very many access ports to get to things and all items seem to be of high quality.

As the 530 came with 4 maybe 5 engine options, I can only speak to the Volvo 12 liter engines, which I’m guessing would be the worse of the bunch.

Presently I’m 6’1”/ 240lbs & although I work out 4-5 days a week 6+ decades have taken its toll on me and im not as limber as I think I am. That being said most of the engine access is very good.
Being straight drives the rear of the engines as well as tops, bottoms and inboard sides are very easy to get to as you can walk in between the mains to the front bulkhead where the 4 thruster batteries are. Each engine has 2 8D-starting Batteries behind them and then 400gal fuel tanks & Racors. Behind the tanks there is about 4/5 ft of space with the ER ladder & then the Gen, Gen battery as well as 2 8d house batteries/inverter-charger -rudders etc
The filters, dip sticks have been mounted inboard so no issues. The starboard impeller maybe a bear as it’s on the outside of the engine and I haven’t been there yet. Ill see in the spring or just have the yard do it. Port impeller no issue. The front of the engines look tight & changing belts don’t look like fun. The port engine has 2 alternators and I cant see ether, but as I get the know the boat better it may not be an issue.

Again this is with the largest displacement engines the 530 came with.

The 530 seems downright huge compared to my 50’ Cruisers. So far Ive had a max of 15 people on the boat and can easily see 20+ people being comfortable, Yet I cant imagine having more than the 15. Its like herding cats. The master SR is crazy big. Has way more closet/storage space than the Cruisers.
Also major headroom throughout
I think I touched on how it runs in another post. Email or call with any questions you have

Andy: How do you find the inside helm in hot sunny weather? It seems like a large greenhouse to me.

Andy,

Thanks for another thorough response. We found a nice place, with a 60’ slip, so it could be ideal for yout size boat. And no boats across from us so plenty of room to spin her. I will reach out to you in the near future to discuss further.

Thanks again,

Jeff

Its not been bad since I fixed the pilot house A/C unit. that said the AC unit is 16K & works overtime, Im thinking of bumping it to a 24K unit maybe next year.
It seems to be more of an issue at rest than underway. I just had a new windshield cover made as well as covers for the side Pilot house windows. Im sure that will be a major help next summer.
Also just like opening the smiles on the bridge i can open the PH door, the aft slider & the door to the bridge and get some serious airflow

Andy consider some fabric covered aluminized bubble wrap window covers. We just put a layer of "Reflectix Double Reflective Insulation" under the exterior window covers. I suggest having it covered with fabric to dress it up and keep it from rubbing off on the windows.

Installing this under the exterior window cover made a HUGE difference in the A.C.'s ability to keep up. We have this installed on the RV when we are aboard and settled and it works quite well in this case as well.

Interesting stuff & I’ll look into it. The new windshield/window covers are Semi-transparent and I like that I can somewhat still see outside. If they don't supply much relief I’ll try the "Reflectix Double Reflective Insulation” for the wicked hot days

I guess its not an issue running a “Carver” to the Abacos

Ha! No it is not. We've stayed at that marina for months and months. Great spot and decent food at their restaurant. The first time into Hopetown Harbour is always an experience.

Andy, I never doubted it.

But, you have me a little concerned about the AC in the pilot house. To me, inclement weather is 90’s and high humidity - I need my AC!

Jeff,
I’m with you on needing good AC.
As my boat sits now the staterooms are like an ice box and the Salon unit really cools down that area as well as a little of the Pilothouse.

My PH unit is a 16K unit and looks original, 18YO. It needed a control board & control head but I had it finally fixed after the major heat wave we had this summer was over. The area was livable but not great.

My last boat, a Cruisers 5000 Sedan, was also a PH and the AC always worked overtime when really sunny out, it just barely got the job done. The windshield covers made a big difference

Next summer Im prepared to replace the unit with new and as it’s a 230v unit I can easily go bigger. I’m going to reach out to those 2 530’s in the Albacos and get their feedback as to how their AC’s are doing the job.
