Got a nasty gram from the Borough of Park Ridge stating that I'm in violation of 101.24 - C Outdoor parking - "Boats, boat trailers and recration trailers or vehicles may be stored on-site, provided that they are located behind the front line of the dwelling unit and the vehicle is screened alongside and rear property lines. Screening should consist of evergreen landscape material, six feet to eight feet in height, sufficient to screen boats, boat trailers, recreation trailers or vehicles stored on site from side and rear views.

Anyone ever heard of something like this? My driveway is in front of my house, and there is no way to get the boat to the side or in back of my house. Plus it is rb2@gr5t12' high on the trailer, so 6-8 feet would not be sufficient anyway.

A lot of places are enacting ordinances such as that.

This is not the first time I have heard this but there is a good chance that a neighbor complained. In Nanuet there are plenty of people with boats in their driveways and front yards for many years some don't even move for the summer.

Yeah, I figured that. I have a hatfield's and McCoy's situation going on here recently.

If you have to put it back behind the "front line" of the dwelling and then plant evergreens 6 to 8 feet high, how do you get the boat back out in the spring?

Down here most HOA's do not allow boats or RV to be kept on the property unless the fit into the garage. This creates numerous business that let you store you toy on their property behind electronic fences for about $30 a month. A fairly cheap solution with 24 hour access.

I agree with that ordinance. Boats on trailers in driveways are ugly and detract from the neighborhood. I would not want to see any boats or trailers or RV's on my street.

I agree, I also don't think we should be able to park any foreign cars on our property either.

Yea Butch I'm with you. Let's also set a dress code for over-weight women, don't want to see them in any revealing outfits outside of the home.

And don't even get me started on kids. They are the last thing I want in my neighborhood.

;)

BTW; We put on long pants and sweatshirts today in rememberence of all of you enduring the white stuff.

It just never crossed my mind. Why would anyone hate us boaters!! Agree on he eyesore after I looked at it in a different light. Guess I'll have to call an audible.

WTF is "evergreen landscape material" Whatever it is, duck tape it to the back of the winter cover and put the boat in your back yard right up to the fence.

The guy that's storing my boat for the winter (not SPBM) charges $10/foot for the season. It's worth it just to save on driveway space. My wife always hated me storing the boat in the driveway.

Dont worry Pete, we will box some up and send it your way...

I don't like some of my neighbors landscaping and porch lights maybe I'll complain. it's amazes me how people tell you what you can and cannot do on your own property. Jersey is just getting crazy with some of these rules.

It's not just Jersey. You can do what you want on your property as long as it doesn't detract from your neighbors' property. That's why there are zoning regulations.

The problem with that is, who decideds it detracts from the property. No one pays my mortage and no one pays my taxes for me so they sure are not going to tell me what to do on my property. Yes, I attempt to keep my property looking good and do maintain it.

When I first had my house built, the seller attepted to tell me what I could and could not do. They tried to tell me what colors I could have on the house as well as what land scaping I had to do. They also said no trucks or boats. Needlees to say I owned both. The seller did not want to buy my boat or truck so I ended up having both on my property. Never heard from them again.

I can understand there being regulations if its a condo or small complex but not on the land I own.

Caryl-d I agree with you, you can't have a boat in your driveway but your neighbor next door can have grass 3' high or the house needs a paint job or falling apart. I'm always working on my house to keep it looking good and I don't feel like a boat in the driveway is going to take away from the area. Then people with old cars shouldn't park them in the driveway either.

That's not exactly true.

We wanted to put vinyl siding on our home in NJ, it did not detract from my neighbor's property. In fact all of our neighbors appeared in support of our request. The zoning officer decided we could put up the vinly siding, but we would have to continue to paint all trim, as he found it to be unique. (Unique means because somebody had bad taste a number of years ago, I am obligated to carry on that same bad taste.)
We claded it in aluminum anyways.

We decided to replace an existing deck in our backyard as it was in complete disrepair. In the process we also wanted to enlarge the deck. Again it did not detract from my neighbors, and again they showed up at all hearings in support. The zoning officer held us up for several weeks as he tried to convince us to paint the deck and handrails in a scheme that he felt would be more attractive to the overall neighborhood, never-mind the fact that you could not see the deck unless you were in my backyard. We explained to him that painting the deck and handrail would create a maintainence nightmare, that we had already lived through on the previous deck, and paint was out of the question. He eventually conceeded that he did not have any right to ask for this, and that it was only his personal preference that he was trying to impose.

Zoning laws may have been the original intent of the authors, but as with anything else, give a few individuals a little bit of power and eventually they will try to impose their will on you.

Our law-makers are currently doing just that with our constitution, but that's another whole story.

I totaly agree with giving people a little power and they think they can change the rules. I'm in the construction field and we run into this all the time with inspectors.

Give a man an inch and he thinks he's a ruler

Its a shame, they start out with good itentions but end up getting out of hand. Next thing you know you cant take a crap without having to ask permission.

Building inspectors are another story. Had one try to enter my residence when I was not home. Ended up pulling the door out of my wifes hand who was holding my son at the time. She almost dropped him and ended up hurting her arm. Once I filed my complaint with the town he never did come back to find out if I had a permit or not.
