Ocean Conditions Tomorrow?

Anybody care to hazard a guess as to what the "real feel" conditions will be tomorrow around 10:30?

Forecast says:

Sunday E wind 12 to 14 kt. A slight chance of showers before noon. Seas around 3 ft.

Trying to decided between staying inside or going outside. I don't really mind the inside ride I was trying to save some time. Of course if it's rough on the outside then all my time savings are shot.

Just thought I would share my quandary

I heard from Jeff, he went inside, touched in Moriches slowly and softly, backed off, no issues.
From Montauk up the seas were confused, so not a fun ride.
But he is safe and sound in Nantucket!

Long trip and a brave Captain!
 
Damn... I want to go to Nantucket but its FAR !

Good for him
 
And I think he cruises alone!
My farthest trip North was Newport but not sure I would cruise that far alone, I like other boats with me!
 
Yep agreed.. hard to find others with the same time off.... Thast a haul of a trip ...Have to break it up ..

Pick ur travel days .

Went to Hyannis ten years ago. About the same distance but not as nice.

It is a lot of running. Stop at Block on way up and Newport or Montauk on way back. If you have deep pockets and a fast boat you can do it in one shot. Guy in my club with a 55 viking came home to ER in 6 hours. When you can run in the 30s and afford 85+ gph it is easy. lol

We are heading to montauk and block island late august. Don't think we have enough time to go further than block, but looking forward to trip none the less..

Oh and before Jeff left he said his wifi on his boat took a dump, so may be why he is not online much.
Plus he is in Nantucket, so why waste time on BE!
 
I've gone from Edgartown Martha's Vineyard back home to Lindenhurst in one day with a fuel stop in Montauk. Long run but doable, I think Nantucket is another 20 miles or so.
 
The 5 hr run to Kingston hurt my butt.....

Didn't help all the gas boats had to fuel : (

Hey Guys,

Sorry for the radio silence but a series of unfortunate incidents had me preoccupied just before the trip and then heated up during the trip so in between the drama (hint: anybody know of any companies looking for a new CIO/CTO?), I was working hard on focusing on having a great time on the trip.

Anyway, as Dave said, I touched in Moriches because I tried to thread between the red-green-red combo just east of the inlet and now I have confirmed that the trick is to just stay 25-35' south of those three cans as I hit that same area going west at 4 pm on Saturday (almost dead low tide).

The rest of the cruising part of trip was relatively uneventful but going between the vineyard and nantucket through muskeget channel (http://www.mrec.umassd.edu/resourcecenter/muskegettidalproject/) was interesting to say the least. With a strong outgoing tide and strong north winds we met up with some big water for about 30 minutes. Returning to Newport north of the vineyard and through the cut near Woods Hole was much easier on my bones.

Now on for the real hair raiser...I've never had to travel through the Shinnecock canal going south when the locks were 'open' (or is it closed) with the middle gate closed and that was a near disaster. As I approached I saw that the only way for me to pass the locks was a 'small' chute to the extreme western side of the canal (all the way to the left: http://bit.ly/1nNOkhY) that I was convinced that I could not fit through. So in my attempt to reverse hard and turn against a ~14 knot current I ended up kissing the wall with my bow. Gelcoat and imron repairs are in my future. I then retreated far enough back to watch a ~34' cruiser hit the same chute and I then went for it myself. Very tight in there as you need to stay about 2'-4' off the wall and then change angles at the gate. Tricky stuff that requires lots of power...f the no wake bs.

Overall we had a great time but learned to only take the canal south if it is operating, stay south of the Moriches buoys and that Bowens Wharf is a great place to stay in Newport. Alex, the dock master, is a great guy and very accommodating (we changed plans on him at the last minute and he squeezed us in).

I so hear u .... Going tru the locks when they are open is not my Favorite thing..... The current just takes u ... no need for power but u have to be lined up ..... It doesn't get better with practice... Guys will tell u its a piece of cake. Depending on the tide status ... ITS NOT PRETTY ....

Going thru the first time is definitely a white knuckler for sure. I normally go down the center gate when the locks are open. I've not seen the center gate being closed and the West gate opened unless they just started to close or open but then the water would be fairly calm and easier to traverse. If the locks are closed then you would have to use the lock on the east side and follow the lights to enter. With a bigger boat its much easier to lock thru and yes, ignore the no wake sign(s) with the gates open heading in either direction.

What's the reason to leave the big lock closed and that little lock open?
I have never gone thru the west side lock, always the east side lock both open and closed.
Open is hairy but it's wide in there, so as long as you power up it is fine.
Is it that they make one side for going north and one for going south?

Also not sure what red/green/red your talking about.
Do you have buoy #'s.
The first red after inlet your suppose to take on the wrong side.
So normally that red would be on your left heading east, I think it's #24 you go on the wrong side but tight to it.
The Red #26 goes back on your right heading east.

there's only one lock (on the east side) and the other two are just gates. The gates are for boats heading south thru the canal and are the center and West. East if for locking thru (either direction) or northbound when the lock is open.

I am on the power with the gates open and the current is honking. I also make sure I have plenty of room for the boat(s) in front of me to make sure they get thru so I won't have evasive action to take if they have a problem.

Then why use gates at all? Is it jeff didn't wait long enough for lock or is it lock was closed? He makes it sound like he had no choice. A 15' beam can't go thru those gates!
 
Gates are for Southbound traffic when the lock is open. I've not seen the middle gate closed with the lock open. I agree, the west gate is pretty hairy for a 15' beam with the current flowing. If the center gate was closed I would imagine Jeff's boat would be pushed to the west wall as he would follow the current downstream.
