Ocean Conditions Tomorrow?

Ok, so when lock is open and water is rushing South then Northbound boats go thru the lock and southbound boats go thru the gate. I would think it would be other way around because the northbound boats have more control so therefore it's easier to hold the line under power, where southbound your at mercy of current power or no power.

I have only gone thru northbound with lock open, never southbound.

Not sure how accurate this is, but I found this online:

Locks are open 2.5 hours before Sandy Hook High tide and will close 3.5 hours after Sandy Hook high tide.

I always try to figure it out based on peconic tide and shinnecock low since I know they don't want water flowing south to north, but that formula above if right is easier to use.

Geez....I always thought the gates on the north and south side was what formed the lock??? I went through the west side lock with the gates open heading southbound with my 44 (14'3" beam)and puckered the whole way through. I can't get under the RR bridge with my new boat so I don't have to worry about locking through.

HAMMERING NORTH isn't much better... the more power the better.... U try and leave room between u and the boat in front for when stuff goes bad or so u can apply more power .... BUT SOME LIL DOUCE always manages to jump the fing line and gets tossed in a whirlpool of hurt...

The fun of boating ... cant even get respect from ur fellow boaters ... its all about them

rb2@gr5tDave, I don't have buoy numbers but there are def three cans just east of the inlet (and east of the one red that you're supposed to aim at as you are heading north out of the 5mph inlet area) where you can see the southern edge of the shoal clearly during low tide.

So it seems that I'm not the only one who has seen that middle gate open before. Someone tried to convince me that it is always closed but I know I've gone through there before. Did I mention that I tried to hail the lock operator on almost every channel to get them to confirm that I fit in that western chute and they didn't answer. Not even sure they were there. Definitely a dangerous situation when there is no one on duty. Maybe I should send them the bill for my repairs :)

The lock attendant is useless.... A few years back two lil boats broke loose in the locks and were playing bumper boats. The lock chic was watching tru her window and never stopped the procedure....

Only way to reach lock attendant is phone.
