I had heard the rumor so Sat we drove over to see if it was true, and it is. The new owners are Andy and Vina Smith and the nicest people you will ever meet. Their background is in the storage unit business and this is like a labor of love - it is a family affair. They, and a bunch of other family and friends were over there working their butts off cleaning and sorting out what's there. They want to restore it to it's old charm and not go high tech and I think they might just pull it off. It looks so much better already - they are chopping weeds, grinding up decrepid old boats, and taking dumpster after dumpster of junk away. I met several of the berthers and was surprised how good some of the sheds looked. One guy, Ace, has taken it upon himself to vaccuum the spider webs from the whold shed - it looks great! I am almost thinking I might move there - the sheds have a beautifull tree lined path on one side, a wide slough between the island and the shed, and then trees on the other side - it really is beautifull! There is not a lot of current there because the island blocks most of it, but you are right on fast water. The prices are really reasonable - but as time goes on, they will go up as the place gets better. They have a long way to go - the heads are a mess, there is no gas or pump-out, and there is still a lot of clean-up and rebuilding, but when its done, it will be a really great place - I can see it happening! They were going to move into the house on the point, but have decided to make it into a club house and later maybe a resturant or outside eatery/bar. If you haven't ever been to the house, the view is the best - 180 degrees up and down the Moke - WOW!

Anyway, Andy and Vina are from a family of really serious sailing folk, so down the line you will probably see some world class sail boats and a sea plane or two hanging around. I am going to give them this site so they can join in - they really want peoples opinions and advice and you guys (and girls) are some of the best in the Delta.

Stop and visit them - they are really nice!

That would be great to have someone work on the look of that place. They have alot of work to do and I wish them luck. I keep my ski boat at Delta Boat Storage and have always wondered what would happen with that place. It is a great location and a nice protected area for the moorage.

Sounds like Perry's is going to get some TLC at last. The place does have a lot of potential and it's one of the oldest marinas in the Delta. I'll be out on Andrus Island tomorrow and may drop by to have a look see.

Boater3500,

Eddy is going to run the shop - he has been there for years I beleive. They are cleaning out all the old shop areas and working on the lift. I am pretty sure Juan had already made plans to move on, but maybe they can talk him into staying.

Yzer - you should introduce yourself - they are really interested in input and you have lots!!

Jim

I wish the new owners the best of luck. I always harbored a desire to purchase Perry's and turn it into one of the premiere marinas in the Delta. They have virtually everything .... residence for the owners, haul out facilities, plenty of space for land based operations and room for lots of boat houses. Unfortunately, when prime boating season is on us, marina owners are working their tales off in the marina instead of out enjoying their boat.

I'm going to drop by this weekend and meet the new owners.

I'm going head down to the boat this Tuesday and I drive right by Perry's. I've never been there, but I think I'll stop by and have a lookee see.

Jim, thanks for cluing us in on this news!

Any idea what lenths the boat slips are? Are they looking for berthers at this time? I'm in Spindrift but the current and wind can be a pain especially when you have a 13'6" beam in a 14'wide slip. I'm on the waiting list as Korths but would be interested in moving to Perrys. I'm coming up for the Thanksgiving holiday. I'll stop in on the weekend.

3birds,

Stop by. They have several 40' but I dont know the width. They are off the fast water and protected from wind - should be nice. Let us know what you think.

Jim

We stopped by on Saturday and spoke with the office manager. The owners have some aggressive plans to get the place up and running. They will be dredging the area in back of the slips and will be rebuilding the sheds. They want to keep a 50's look, like Korths. We put our name on the waiting list, along with a bunch from Ox Bow. I don't think we will be moving anytime soon. I hope they will be able to accomplish their goals.

When do you think they will begin renting to new berthers? Any mention fo berth rental costs?

They had a couple of 40's when I was there a few weeks back that were available - I think they were around $300 but that is just a recollection. The covered 40' dock is in pretty decent shape already, but there needs to be some dredging to give it good access, or at a minimum, get all the weeds and algea out so you don't clog up your cooling! They might have already done it - I am going to stop by this weekend.

Jim,

Do you recall the vertical clearance on the 40' covered slips? I may have to stop by there and have a look, too.

The current rate for a 40' slip is $305. The manager said that would most likely change once the sheds were rebuilt. She also mentioned they are not very wide, I think a max of 14'. I can't answer the hieght question. She also said that max water level right now is around 4' so depending on what you draw, you have to time your arrivals and departures.

I haven't dropped by Perry's yet but I wish them luck. There are some well-intended environmental regulations that make maintenance and restoration of older marinas needlessly complicated. Getting dredging permits can be tough. Keeping protective paint on wooden sheds can be difficult, too. Contractors have to use a lot of drop covering to keep paint from hitting the water which makes painting on or near the water very expensive. Eradication of invasive water weeds gets complicated. This is an area where lawmakers need to make some changes to keep the Delta marina industry alive, otherwise a lot of marinas and boating will just disappear over the years.

I thought the same thing when I read the part about the dredging. Passing by there often I thought it was a shame that the place had not been sold. Let's hope the new owners don't get frustrated too soon.

Al,

I have not made it back to check the vertical clearance, but it was pretty good as I recall. did you get by to see for yourself?

Jim

I had one day in the area when I was supposed to be fishing last Sat, but the wx prevented that plan. So I turned to previously procrastinated projects and, as often with old boats, one project lead into two others and before I know it, the day is over! I did go home feeling like I accomplished something, though. I just didn't get to stop by Perry's like I hoped. My daughter was waiting for me to bring her home from UC Davis for Christmas break at the end of the day. That was much better than surveying prospective marinas, if you know what I mean. Maybe next month...
