How long will your trip be? How many hours a day do you want to travel? What amenities are you looking for at each stop?

Some suggested stops:

Liberty Landing Marina

Tarrytown Marina/Haverstraw Marina

Newburgh waterfront

Kingston area, on Rondout Creek

Catskill Marina, on Catskill Creek

Here are some websites and guide books that will be of help:

Hogan,Looking to travel about 10 days. I'm thinking it might take me 3 days to reach the finger lakes, this is just an est. I'm not sure what to expect. I'm gathering as much advise as I can to make the right decision. I'm thinking 110 miles a day. Would need to refuel each stop, tie up for the night and have dinner on land. I will check the sites you recomended. Any other imput, please respond

The finger lakes are more than three days each way for you!

If you can make NYC/Liberty Landing in a day, then Kgn in a day, you still probably have a 3-4 day hike. Expect some delays at locks. By and large the lock masters are terrific and pass the word on to get you through, but it's inevitable that you will get stuck here and there waiting for others or for some lock maintenance. I'll post some google earth data that has our gps tracks going up to thousand islands from kgn.

Edit:
Here is a link to some data -> http://home.roadrunner.com/~danmapes/Summer04.kmz

It has all the legs of our trip out the Erie and up to 100 Islands within it. Take the link, and paste it into the search field of maps.google.com. Minimize the waypoints and expand the tracks twisty. You can highlight the individual segments if you like.
Note there are several hops that we did with the dink up in 1000 islands. For example the rift should not be attempted with anything larger than say 25 feet.

Dan you're the best - sitting down there in the Bahamas and still able to give advice on cruising Northeastern waters...

Maybe you should come out with your own series of cruising guides :) !!!

Pete we have had some requests for a book. From my perspective it would be quite dull!
But here is today's sunset from Orchid Bay on Guana Cay.

Dan,

Did you go to the Sunday Pig Roast party at Nippers???

Make it to Green Turtle yet?

Let's try to keep this thread on topic...

Jonathan, yes to all! Currently on Guana Cay for a month.
While we have Nippers, Grabbers, and the Crossroads, they don't have the menu diversity one can find in Kingston NY on the way to the Finger lakes.
For example, they specialize in prime rib and conch fritters down here, and do them especially well, but in Kingston it seems the sushi grade tuna is better for unknown reasons.
But when one gets up the Hudson as far as the Troy lock, and stops at Waterford, one may find that Guana Cay has better docking facilities although they are not free as they are at Waterford.
Down here at Orchid Bay, if you plop down a 1000 bucks, you get free dockage for the month and all of the incidentals, like water, electric, fuel (4.40/gal diesel) and even the restaurant when open are taken from that deposit of 1000 bucks.
While back at Kingston one can get a free ride from the Rondout Yacht Basin over to the restaurants at the Historic water front where the maritime museum is.
The pool at the Orchid Bay Resort and Marina is smaller than the pool at the Rondout Yacht Basin but the view from the pool is better at Orchid Bay.
By the way, they offer rooms on site here at Orchid Bay while in Kingston one has to travel across the creek from the Rondout Yacht Basin to take advantage of the B&Bs in the waterfront area.
Mike did I do good?

I thought Dan did a good job as well however I think that picture sould be banned. Here I am getting ready for 12" of snow and I have to look at that sun set over the water. Its just not right! The Caryl-d should be at the dock there..

Butch thanks for reminding me. Down here at Guana Cay (pron. = key) they have white sand beaches, and we actually walked several miles today without seein a soul. But when one goes to kingston ny and stays at the town dock, sometimes in October before they pull the docks out of the water, it may snow. That is not to say the beaches which contain virginal white snowy colored sand are perfect, there are some piles of weeds that wash up with the tide.
In kingston the snow plows tend to be more noisey than the golf carts down here.

Does this mean you made sure Caryl will be home tomorrow to clear the driveway?

Dan,

You see that dark blue water out in your picture?

Sushi lurking right out there, go 3-4 mile from land and your in 1000-3000+ feet of water, plenty of yellowfin and mahi. Drag a cedar plug thru a school and you'll have plenty to eat.

In a rolly-poley motor yacht? Tempting but not likely.. Maybe we can hook up with a small center console and rent it.

I may have to do a Stony Point/Haverstraw vs Belmar thread using the "Dan model" of posting! ;)

Mike,
Just so happens Caryl is off tomorrow so she will be able to get up before I do and have the driveway finished. It will be nice getting up to a hot breakfast before I leave. All this for the price of a gallon of gas. What a life and Dan thinks he has it good. Eat your heart out Dan....

Yes fuel is still expensive down here. Everything else? Priceless!
