Red bull Air Race at Liberty state park

I'd be up for that. Seen anything from USCG about how they're going to run the event?

I did a search for the USCG.. I couldn't find anything.. Mike have you?

I was invite to watch a practice air show out in Freeport tomorrow. Any excuse to be out on the water works for me.

Will private boats be allowed near the event site?
Local marinas will receive information from the United States Coast Guard (USCG) on Race Box
locations, flight times and waterway restrictions, and will pass that information along to their
customers.
The Red Bull Air Race and local authorities discourage viewing from boats on the water during
the race. USCG will set up a safety distance regarding all vessels and based on this all
spectators are advised that the best way to view the race is from the official ticketed areas.

54.Will there be Hudson River waterway restrictions for leisure crafts?
The actual Race area will be part of a Safety and Security Zone in which no vessels are allowed
to move or maneuver. Navigation for all vessels going north or south on the Hudson River will
continue throughout the race. The US Coast Guard is considering spectator boxes for
pleasure craft on the River. In this case, spectator vessels will be grouped together in specific
areas, and around them boats will continue to navigate regularly. ***Full access to the Morris
Canal, where Liberty Landing Marina and Liberty Harbor Marina are located, is planned to be
continuous and uninterrupted throughout the event***
55.Can boats watch the Race from the river?
The US Coast Guard will be regulating spectator boats and information regarding spectator
boats will be provided to local marinas. There will be no radio feed of the race LIVE show for
boaters.
The US Coast Guard will put out an advisory notice on homeport 2-3 weeks prior to the race
with additional information about the regulated navigation area and spectator boxes. Check

Looking at the map, it appears that the area slightly west of and between the Status and Ellis Island may be a good spot. I regularly anchor there, it is shallow enough to not need a mile of scope, but deep enough to not worry about grounding.

http://www.waterwayguide.com/navupdate.php?area=10#1429 NY: Hudson River Regulated Navigation Area for Red Bull Air Race

In accordance with regulations published in 33 CFR 165, the Captain of the Port of New York has
established a temporary Regulated Navigation Area on the waters of the Hudson River from the
shores of Liberty State Park to an area south east of Ellis Island (see page 3). The temporary
Regulated Navigation Area will be in effect on Thursday and Friday, June 17-18 (practice days) and
Saturday and Sunday, June 19- 20, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Movement within this
area by unauthorized vessels is prohibited. Violations of this regulated navigation area are
punishable by a fine of up to $50,000 and/or five years imprisonment.
Spectator vessels areas listed as BRAVO, CHARLIE, and DELTA will be established on Saturday
June 19th and Sunday June 20th for recreational vessels and non-motorized vessels.

To view the details of the spectator area see the 1st District Notice to Mariners 21/10

Spoke to the USCG today. Looks like the viewing area for power boats under 20 meters will be just south and east of Ellis Island. I am going, should be fun.

Is there a chart showing where the viewing/anchorage area is?

South of Ellis is no good, east of it is the middle of a very busy intersection of the river.

I have charts of the area. What I'm looking for is where the exact spectator zone is. Will they allow anchoring?

Unlike the USCG rules for the fireworks this year, there is no restriction stating that vessels must remain underway. However, the notes refer to a chart on a page that doesn't exist so where the spectator area is, is somewhat a mystery.

When I spoke to the CG. They told me that Charlie (Power boats under 60 feet) is the area on the chart just south and east of Ellis. It is just outside the flight path.

That area can get a bit rough, with boat chop, and if there is a southerly wind blowing, waves from the Atlantic.

The water there varies between 10 and 40 feet. I have been there many times.

The one thing we will all have to look out for is the tide swing. Anchor too close to the edge of the safe zone, and when the tide swings, you could be into the forbidden area.

I will find the CG chart

OK, found it. AS I said, Charlie is south and east of ellis. not the most comfortable spot, but there you have it.

We will be getting waked by a lot of boats in that area. The various tourist boats go right past there for the statue. Also, that is a main area for barges, etc. We will be rocking and rolling, especially if there is any wave action.
