It seems things are going to change on the creek. Me, I think Island Dock and the surrounding areas needs to be developed. The property is languishing and is unsightly.
BUT,
There are existing businesses that jut out into the creek namely Hideaway and the City Docks. Ianucci wants half the creek and I suspect that means other areas are going to be pressed to conform.
Once that happens expect the profitability of Hideway to fall and thus, it will fall into the hands of a developer also? Just a humble supposition here..
It will be interesting to see what the maritime law specialist comes up with.

Do squatter's rights have bearing on a tidal creek? If not, then can we punt mooring balls on the creek also?

Dan;

Let them know that we are a powerful group, and we ave a lawyer on retainer. Furthermore we will not hesitate to let him loose on them as soon as . . . . . He get's back from vacation.

"Iannucci says his land runs out into the middle of Rondout Creek and that he ought to be able to use it. He said he wants to be sure the matter is resolved before he moves forward with his development plan."

He may own the land but I always thought the state owned the water?

Okay, as usual no one is using their brains. Did you catch the part about how Hideaway's docks jut out into the channel, thus "blocking" it???

Here's a newsflash: Hideaway's docks don't block the channel, a bunch of ROCKS cross the north channel just past Hideaway's docks, thus blocking it. If they want to open access around Island dock, why not just dredge and remove the obstruction??????

Of course Hideaway doesn't want to block the channel in front of its property - otherwise the boats who use its facilities wouldn't be able to get out! So therefore, the channel is clear until you get to the end of Hideaway, at which point a road onto the island blocks the channel, along with an old barge (just checked it on Google Earth)...

(Actually I think there used to be a navigation channel clear around Island Dock but it was filled in a long time ago)

If believe the channel they are referring to is that channel that leads up to Hideaway from the old bridge on the north side of the island. Take a look at Google Earth and what that area has for docks already. It's pretty clear that if the marinas have boats out to the middle on both sides, no one is going anywhere. If both sides of that area from the old bridge going up stream have docks or boats to the middle it will be blocked.
I've dinked in there many times as have you and I think if you reflect on what that area looks like in the summer when the Fireworks are scheduled, you can see Ianucci's point.

I follow you, Dan. So what is the fair resolution to the problem??? I assume Hideaway has legal permission to put its docks where they are, right? If not, or even if its questionable just as my boss did on Lake Mahopac, they're going to have a fight on their hands...

It would seem to me that if all involved want to work something out that is for the betterment of the boating community they'll be able to do so...

That's what we could hope for. Somehow it would not suprise me to see Hideaway fold up. They will lose tons of dock space eventually because I don't see Ianucci taking it easy on them.
But for all his effort on the waterfront, Ianucci is going to have to overcome quite a bit of the surrounding area to make a development there appealing. Especially when the value of real estate is starting to drop in more desireable areas.
I hope he's in for the long haul. Everything else (like that hotel across from Armadillo's) has fallen apart because of the control the city imposes. That reminds me, I wonder if that river front development is going anywhere yet.

Refresh my memory, Dan. Where was the Riverfront development going to be???
