Sampson Cay Going Private

http://www.thenassauguardian.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=41586:billionaire-shuts-down-exuma-island-resort&catid=40:business&Itemid=2 What a shame. That place was incredible. Pristine place to visit.

We are so glad we retired early and spent as much time over in the Bahamas as we have. This is the sort of crap we saw coming with all of the wealth out there. Islands are being bought up like it was an extension of the Jersey shore. Other islands are being developed as private communities where visitors are not welcome.

Worse, we have idiots trying to develop super facilities thinking they are going to make a mint. Then there are the Chinese going in deep with a place like Bahia. All they do is generate some construction business and then collapse in on themselves because there isn't enough demand. Atlantis is a good example.

It's a shame.

Bill, thanks for posting, I won't aware of this and we re heading this way in a couple of weeks.

I know it s a matter of preference but , I never cared for Samson, I found the place too cold, and that went for the management too... I remember a couple of years ago staying there for 2 days and walking to the store at 4:55 and being told sorry we re closing, Come back tomorrow. That and an average of $175 a day in electricity left a bad taste in my mouth,,,

But it is a well protected marina... I think there were many boats there which were there on a seasonal basis with owners flying in and out, that s who is going to be affected the most.

Personally I don't go to the Bahamas to stay at a big marinas like Atlantis or Albany and talking to our guests I think most people like experiencing the real exumas by anchoring out. Staniel is different, it is special, even though it s exposed in a front and power never stays up for more than a half day but just about everyone took there wanted to stay an extra day or come back.

Speaking of going private, there is construction on Gun Cay... A few months ago, there were bulldozers by the light house, last week end there was a bobcat and construction crew at the north side, just off the beach at honeymoon with new signs "no trespassing" :( the crew was shuttling to and from a commercial work boat rafted with an 80' MY ...

Here's a good example:

Yes, Vicki's place, and the whole dang canal.

One has to travel the canal to really learn about over-extending your plans, reality and finances.

What if anything is happening at Walker's Cay these Days ?

"The whole dang canal" is right. What are there, less than half a dozen homes? And the ones that are there are surrounded by razor wire? We met some people about 2 years ago who had just bought a lot on the canal. I figured they got a deal. I almost fell off the boat when they said they paid $100,000!!! I just smiled and waved at that point, just smiled and waved.

Bill Walkers was blasted by a hurricane(s) back in what 2004? It has been closed since then but for sale. Rumors of family dispute etc.. They still have Customs there but no over night docking.

I've never been big on Sampson's either since Marcus Mitchell sold it. And you can of course still get to the sand bores via a tender.

And what does one do at the Sand Bores?

Hang out, swim, tan, jetski, relax, shell, enjoy the view, drink a beer or two, etc. :-)

Same thing you do at a beach :) with the water on every side not just on one ...

There is great snorkeling on the ocean side about 100' walk across the narrow stretch of land

This is always a favorite for us, all a quick tender run from SCYC or big majors

We re going back at the end if the month, I can't wait!
