Butch two years ago I ran out to top off my tanks the night before a trip I know I was pushing the tides a bit but I tried to return about 2.25 hours before low tide and I ran aground over a 100 yards from the first marker. There was no way I could have pushed my way through without major damage! I had to back out and go to HM we called them told them of my issue and they were very nice and let me tie up until the tides came up.

Last year we had a major storm heading towards us, I went to Haverstraw to see if they would take us in to ride out the storm - after all, they are well protected and have plenty of water. Like a bad neighbor, they said "NO".

MYC then took in 20 boats from PBM, no questions asked, nothing asked of us. They kept us there almost a month until PBM could haul us out.

I am forever grateful to the wonderful people at MYC, who told us "that's what neighbors do" when asked why they took (and saved us all).

Haverstraw might have had business reasons for what they did, but it shows, all they care about is BUSINESS, while MYC cares about fellow boaters.

When Sandy blew into town, Haverstraw showed their true colors, and MYC showed their true colors. I will never forget which marina was there for us when we needed them.

I've stayed at MYC during a storm great people. And as of more useable time its still costing more out of pocket.

So true. MYC is a first class operation!

We also tried to get into HM and they said no. The reason, their docks are more important to them then trying to help the community. (Yes I'm paraphrasing but that's the jist of the conversation.) A shame really as overall we enjoyed our years as HM members.

HM, bad people, Stay away

No, not "bad people" - they just showed their true colors when people from other marinas needed them to step up.

I think every business has to run with its own best interest even at time of trouble. Maybe even especially at time of trouble. If boaters chose to be at other marina to save money, or because friends or because they know the owners then I think you make your choice. As a business owner when we get calls and customers say the, company they booked with cant service them a lot of times we don't take the business because we think about our own customers and we don't want to be over booked. If they know there are going to be damages, boats and docks are going to get destroyed why would they want to take the risk! I think that would be dumb business decision. Little did they know how right this decision was and bad was the storm going to be!!! When I saw Bob the GM the morning after the storm he was WHITE, over whelmed, confused. Him and the crew worked their ass off to get the marina ready on time. Can't imagine why they will want to be responsible to another 20-30 who knows maybe hundreds of boats who wanted to "be safe".
Even before being a HM member I coordinated my boat delivery there so I can move it across the river and the office and service people were extremely supportive, friendly and customer service was clearly a goal. then I coordinated with them a trip of almost 20 boats that came from the other marina I was at and every single boat was accommodated, we were next to each other, we got the power we needed, the BBQ zone we reserved, phone calls confirmations the whole weekend went with out a problem.
Moved my boat to HM at the end November 2011. NO notice, didn't even called them simply brought the boat in, no problem, happy faces, smiles.
Since then every stupid request I made, INCLUDING hauling my boat out of the water in less than 24 hours notice before the storm, every email I sent is always respond in no time, hell they even "like" some of my posts on FB. :-) To me the employees of HM own the business, they act like they do. this is exactly how I want my employees to handle them self, think about the best interest of the business and sometime it means saying no to others.
its all looking different depends from which angle you are looking at it.
Just saying....

I guess that's why they told all boats over 40' at HM during Irene to leave the marina so the docks would not be stressed. So much for taking care of their own members...

Made up story.

So if all your marinas are so great why did you not stay and ride the storm out or get pulled out? Its so easy to chastise another marina to your own benefit. The good thing is that you are not at our marina.

I think we need to stop telling everyone how great it is at HM we don't need more boats blocking our view:) Kind of like Hogan not wanting to mark the channel to Bowline no need to risk over crowding!

It's kind of sad though I wish others could enjoy what we have!

To add to Mikes comments about Sandy ask some of the yacht owners about being told they had to leave the marina before the storm. I know it also happened during Irene. OK deny us the privilege but to tell paying members. And yes I do know someone who was told. I also had the privilege of being in MYC. I was called on Sunday morning by members of MYC and they asked me to come over. it was apparent at that point that we would be in trouble at PBM. I will always hold a high respect for them for this and am grateful for that phone call. I would no doubt had lost my boat if I stayed. They are a true caring marina...

You obviously missed the entire point of my post.

Our marina, just like the one you were in, was going to, and did, take a direct hit from Sandy - resulting in loss and damage to boats. Haverstraw ran itself like a business, and didn't care about neighboring fellow boaters. MYC went out of their way to HELP neighboring fellow boaters. There is an unwritten code among boaters that we help each other in time of need.

By acting the way they did, each of those two marinas showed their "true colors".

Bob you got pulled out by other marina for the storm, and they did it on short notice. That a marina who cares.

Sorry, no. This is a fact.

Mike ,
I did not miss the point as I know you long enough to read between the lines. [}}:-|>>]

So I take it that you will not be out on Saturday due to your mid morning mamosa's? And the tide will be low....Hmm Mamosa's isn't that a dock mary drink?

What view? The one you have of the peninsula?

I think all you guys that have some issue with HM, please, you are right, the place is NG.

If everyone comes to HM and they fill their slips, than, supply and demand, the fees will rise, so please go to another marina.

What is a "mamosa" - is that made with breast milk?

We will be joining the celebration that our marina owners are hosting, then we will be out later. Get a good spot to anchor.
