Stickers on documented boats

For those who boat in south shore waters and have documented boats:

- do you put the NY registration stickers on your hull up forward like it says to?
- if you don't, have you ever been stopped/hassled/ticketed by Bay Constable, SCPD, CG etc about it?

It seems like a majority of documented boats do not display the stickers. It's rare I see one hanging out there by itself, maybe 1 in 10. I've gone right past various LEOs numerous times myself and not gotten a second look. I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with getting grief about this from our local authorities.
 
You have to display the registration stickers but you are not to display the registration numbers.

Maybe you don't see the stickers becasue they did not pay for them. Read: They did not pay sales tax and register the boat with the state.

I have the sticker displayed. On my previous boat the first year with it before I got it registered I ended up getting ticketed for it. I got the registration taken care of and the ticket was dismissed with no fine, but it was a wasted day in court.

Some weekends the police, coast guard and sometimes town bay constables are all lined up by Captree. I'd think they'd look for the sticker.
 
John, did you get stopped specifically for not displaying a sticker, or for something else? Or you're not sure why they stopped you.
 
I got stopped for going a little too fast in the no wake zone between the drawbridge and Captree. Then when they asked for registration I only had the documentation. They let the speed issue go and gave me the ticket for the registration.

The Coast Guard could give a rats a$$ about the registration as long as your documented. The New York boys have a different view on the matter. If they can prove that your boat is in NY waters for more than 90 consecutive days they can nail you, I guess in John's case it would be up to him to prove his boat was not in NY for more than 90 consecutive days.

From the NYS DMV website:

What if my boat is documented by the US Coast Guard?

You must register the boat in NYS if:

the boat is not used for commercial purposes in NYS, and

the boat will be used on public waterways in NYS for 90 or more consecutive days.

If your boat was documented by US Coast Guard, you do not receive a NYS registration number. You receive NYS registration stickers only. Attach the stickers in the position where the registration numbers are normally located.
 
Thanks. I know the legal requirement. I have registered the boat and payed the tax. I am reacting to the fact that my boat is 35 years old and appears to have never had a sticker on it for it's entire existence. So I am just looking for any direct experiences anyone has had getting grief about it, like John's.

I have them above the pilot house and the salon window – I have been approached by various NY harbor police/masters and as soon as I point out the stickers they turn away

Ron,

If you have the sticker you should put it on the boat. Gives LEO one less reason to pull you over.

Andy, why not put the sticker up near the bow ? I think that's where they look first. In fact on the instructions, thats the spot they say to put it...

Andy, why not put the sticker up near the bow ? I think that's where they look first. In fact on the instructions, thats the spot they say to put it...

the previous owner put them there- I just put mine over the old ones
As soon as i point them out the LEO have no issues

- and for how much i paid NY in taxes their staying where they are!
 
Andy....never mind the sticker....photo looks like a decent day....why are you not piloting from up on the bridge ???

Pic was taken by Walter while we were waiting for the Shinecock canal to open, I was running from the lower helm to be able to tie up in the lock quickly via the pilot house door – you can see the bow line and fenders at the door ready to be set

Your bridge is spectacular, but I finally get the gig on driving in the salon. Since it is only you, Mel and the pup, that is cool. But for a boat your size, that helm eats up a lot of real estate. I was really disappointed on the size of your salon (based on the size of your boat). Always looked at an interior helm as a waste of space, but I get it now. The other thing about your boat, is you tell me you have better visablity driving below, while backing down. Never would of belived that till I saw you dock.

You really gave me a different outlook on a helm in the salon, thanks.
