Stop and Search

Lex, you did it up in style!!!

I think there is some value to that article, since the PD fellow said what they are looking for - erratically driven boats, ill-equipped boats. So if you're riding down the River with two 8 year olds hanging their feet over the bow and not wearing PFDs, guess what - you're likely to be stopped. Same if you're frolicing on jetskis or driving in some big obnoxious go-fast...

This still begs the question however, why Lex would have been singled out to that degree driving a nondescript boat and presumably just tooling down the River. Perhaps you should lose the sportjacket next time ;)...

I know that anytime I see someone operating a watercraft in a sportcoat I call the Feds!

Hi Pete!

I have been away from the posting for a few days. I am in Rhode Island camping with my son.

Pete, I want to clarify, I was NOT singled out.

The police agencies were stopping EVERYBODY!

The point of my letter and the article is not simply about police stopping boating boaters simply enjoying the Hudson, but the eroding of our american way of life of living FREE without being stopped with NO PROBABLE CAUSE.

Makes sense to me, Lex...

How'd the camping trip go? I'm sure you and your son made some great memories. I did the same thing a couple of weeks ago with my son also...

They are the Feds!

Thanks, whoever, for the link above. Nice Pictures (2) Lex. And a pretty good mooring too!

Hi Pete!
<My son and I had a great time! We did some sailing. It was great!
My original posting was published in Boating on the Hudson Magazine on Friday. Pass the word.

Yesterday evening we were in the dink drifting in the middle of the river north of the kgn light. We were outside of the channel. We watched as two patrol boats one headed north and the other south approached each other from a distance. We were off the beach well out of the channel in the middle of the river when the north bounder makes a HARD RIGHT and starts coming our way.
For what ever reason the south bounder got his attention and we avoided what looked like an inspection.
Geo thanks for posting the link. Lex it was a good honestly written letter. I can only suggest that alot of the increased activity is due to alcohol related injuries, deaths, and other boating accidents with the threat of terrorism added in for extra incentive.
I'm sure all of us have had to pass through a toll booth or intersection where the police have decided to set up a sobriety check point, or inspection sticker check.
I don't know how they can do that on the river effectively but if that was their intention they really missed the mark because they have demonstrated out uncoordinated the services are through their (hopefully) unintended harassment.
Either than or they got the word to ratchet things up for a reason. Sadly, the boating community is on the low end of who can deliver the most crap. I wonder how many cars and trucks pass over the TZ bridge in the amount of time it takes us to pass under it at 10 knots.

Lex
I started reading some of the responses to your letter. Wow.

Lex, I stopped by what I thought was your boat but since I wasn't definate I didn't leave a card. Did run into two old schoolmates who said they hadn't seen the owner of the boat in question (Green/white Larson cuddy). I'll stop over middle of the week to see if you're around. Nice article, just hope you realize the sheriff's pass your boat on the way to theirs every day!

Hi Mannmade. I will be on the boat on Wednesday. I have the only boat that is docked bow first on the left side of F dock.
I look forward to meeting you.
Lex

I too have replaced some new safety gear. I now have three expired flares and four new flares on board. I thought I remembered seeing a post about disposing of expired flares on the board somewhere. Has anyone figured out an answer for this? Please advise.

Orion recommends donating them to the Coast Guard auxiliary - Maybe we can do that as they are boarding us and writing a ticket!! They also recommend igniting them, or just keeping them. I'm not sure of the safety factor of 'expired' flares, or their actual life cycle, but the idea of keeping expired flares onboard doesn't seem like the best option. Doesn't seem like any real disposal options.
