So it's been awhile for me and I looking for any 2018 info on Block.
Looking to take an overnighter to Block, most likely a Sunday night
I'm guessing most/all of the Marinas still raft up everyone??
Any transient slips outside of the salt pond? Like in the old harbor area?
Thx

Oh, yea- Ill keep an eye out for Bob!

Hi Andy,
There are people who swear by Chumplin"s, I mean Champlin's, but I think they are the crudest marina I have ever been too. I stay at Payne's. I have never been rafted up, but I have seen it. Maybe they traveled together. The Boat Basin is also nice. I think if I remember right the old harbor is mooring only, but I'm not positive. Go to Newport instead. For you it's an extra hour. Have a great trip.

Hahaha.......Bob.

Boat Basin does not raft anyone up, they have floating docks with fingers.

Champlins has floating docks, but they are just when you stern-in to the main dock. You might be "rafted" to another boat, but you get on and off onto the floater, so no one is walking across your boat. If you are on a fixed dock, they won't raft anyone to you unless the place is packed. I have rarely seen that happen.

Hey Billy
Have been to Chumplin’s and outside of the mudslides I was unimpressed.

Both you & Mike have brought up the Boat Basin so that maybe a contender

I Like Newport a lot and my new Gal has never been there. But she is just getting used to Cruising & I’m guessing its 4/5 hours from Greenport. I’m trying to keep the first few trips closer so if things get snotty it wont last that long ;-)
I expect we’ll do longer runs in September & Newport will be one of them

A couple of years ago, Champlins started using a mix to make mudslides, which IMHO, now suck. We stopped buying them and make fresh ones on the boat, which are awesome.

Newport is only about an hour from Block, shouldn't take you more than 2.5 hours from Greenport.

Mike,
RE: 2.5hrs from GP to Block- how many miles do you figure and whats your cruise speed?

I think I see what’s been throwing me off. The charting software ive been using has 2 answers to distance??
one time its 67nm's

another time its 37nm's

Im assuming 37nm is the real deal?

At about 20 knots, it takes me an hour from Plum Gut to Block. At the same speed, it takes about an hour from Block to Newport.

Both of your tracks have you going to Block, then Newport. Run a course thru Plum Gut, or the Race directly to Newport.

Townsends GP to Great Salt Pond BI is right about 37 miles - we made that leg many times.

It's probably about a sixty mile run from Greenport directly to Newport. You don't have to go through the race or the gut. Just head on a more northeast course from the Plum Is. buoy you are already using until you go around Pt. Judith. I thought you cruised at a faster rate. Either way it's worth the extra time. I don't think I would miss it, if I never went to Block again. Unfortunately bringing a land lubber up to speed can be time consuming, I'm doing the same thing. Have fun and pray for smooth seas.

Billy
I can cruise all day long at 23-24Knts if the seas allow & i dont mind the fuel burn.
For planing i use 20knts & save 6/10GPH
I feel for you on the"pray for smooth seas."

I normally anchor out when I go to Block but when I do get a slip I go to Block Island Boat Basin. I think that's the best option. With your boat you would be on an outside slip with a nice view of the harbor and it's all floating docks.

I was thinking of the hook or mooring as my new Tender should be ready next week.
But as its only for one night & my Gal's 1st trip, you sealed it for the Boat Basin

Hey Mike
you want to share the 'Awesome' mud slide recipe???

Vodka, Baileys and Kaluha in a blender with ice and a banana. Butter scotch floater on top.

We love BI. Boat Basin is the best marina if you are not interested in a scene and no rafting up with strangers. The Oar restaurant at Boat Basin is ok, with an amazing view. If you want to take your girlfriend for an amazing dinner and an amazing view, make a reservation at the Spring House Hotel. Go early, grab a drink and sit in Adirondack chairs with beautiful view.

Kimberly's has taken over the restaurant at Champlins. We ate there several times and the food is outstanding. They added an outdoor bar on the deck, the view is fantastic.

The sushi and rum punches at the Oar are excellent.

Our dinners at Winfields and Kimberly's in town were both excellent.

We had a delicious lunch at the Surf House.

FYI - If you do aim for either in the future you'll be on the hook. Mooring cutoff is 50'

Some of the best cruising in that area that I experienced was in mid September. Clear crisp skies, offshore winds for calm seas and no crowds. An excellent time to introduce a new boater to cruising.

With a lower Helm Im hoping to keep cruising till thanksgiving ;-)

That can get hairy.
I stayed in until the Tuesday night before Thanksgiving last year. It was my first season with the boat and I was enjoying it so much that I didn’t want to give it up.
The Saturday night before I came out the temps got unusually cold and I made sure to stay on the boat with the heat blasting, and I ran the motors for a little while before I went to bed so that everything stayed warm in the bilge.
It worked out, I actually enjoyed that last overnight of the season, but I was a little nervous.
Froze my butt off on Sunday doilng oil changes and winterizing everything but the motors.
I remember thinking that I wish I had come out just a few weeks earlier.
I got lucky and we had good weather the two or three days after Thanksgiving so I was able to winterize the motors, clean polish, etc. in relative comfort.
I think I may look to come out two or three weeks earlier this year.
