We are thinking of a possible trip to the Tahoe/Reno area. Would probably to there for a week in a time share.

Does anyone have any favorite places to sight see? Restaurants?

I have heard of a tour boat on Tahoe but have found no details. Anybody familar with this?

All information appreciated.

No question! Go to Virginia City and enjoy some real American history! Put your foot on the same brass bar rail that Mark Twain did when he began his writing career. Study what was in its day the wealthiest place on the planet. Walk the cemetery and see how horrible the various plagues were. It's an amazing place, and not far outside of Reno, with a hundred mile view. All the old swinging door saloons are there still: Bucket of Blood, Silver Dollar and more. It's an easy day trip, and you'll want to go back.

Do your gambling in Reno; they seem to pay off better there then in Tahoe. The Harrah's Showroom in Reno is smaller, more intimate then at Tahoe. I could have touched Sammy Davis' shoes when I saw him live. Yes, I know I am dating myself!

Be sure to drive around to Emerald Bay. What a beautiful site! Well worth the trip for a picnic, etc. If you have a boat, it is a great place to anchor and spend the night. CG markers can be found at the entrance red, white, green = port, middle, starboard. Difficult to see at night due to lots of lights onshore! Look for sudden weather changes. Squalls tend to pop up in the afternoon!

How are you arriving: airport, car, bus?

What are you looking for specifically?

I have a second home in Tahoe and spend lots of time on the water there. Pretty familiar with all the spots on the Lake, and the spots on land in north Tahoe.

Personally, I wouldn't spend much time in Reno.

Zephyr Cove is interesting in that it is the only beach in Tahoe that also service alcohol. On peak weekends, it can be like spring break. Not as raunchy as Lost Isle...
 
If you got some spending money, why not rent a boat and tour the lake on your own. They have to be the most expensive rentals in the USA (I recall something close to 500 bucks all-in for a partial day on a Four Winns bow rider out of Camp Richardson), but it is one of the most spectacular settings in the world. The west shore, which includes Emerald Bay) is more interesting cruising than the east shore.
Whether you rent or take a cruise (the faux paddle wheeler used to be out of south shore), go on a weekday. Also, the lake can get quite choppy in the afternoon; the light on the mountains is pretty in the morning.
There are fishing charters as well, but I have no direct experience. I can ask some good friends who have places up there that have taken one if you like.
Forget Reno and spend as much time at The Lake; the side trip to Virginia City is cool as described above. If you are hikers, Fallen Leaf lake is a pretty day trip.

My wife is not a boat person, or renting a boat would be great fun. Do not think I would want to try fishing this trip. Good info on lake state, thanks. A little old for much hiking. I like my bike and treadmill to be under the fan and in front of the TV.

I have a vacation home that I rent in South Lake Tahoe and have been going there for over 30 years.

My favorite restaurant in South Lake is the Chart House up Kingsbury Grade because of the views. Try to get a reservation with a window seat if you can.

If you like pizza and beer try the Brewery at South Lake Tahoe. They have pretty good pizza and good beer they brew right there. try to go at a non-peak time becuase the pizza quality suffers when it gets crowded.

For a good burger place, there is a good one on Hwy 89 on the way to Emerald Bay. I will get the name and edit this post.

For a nice day trip, drive up for lunch to Fallen Leaf Lake. There is a small lodge there that serves lunch.

Take the gondola up to Heavenly near the casinos. Nice view of the lake. You can hike at the top if you want to. Still worth the trip if you don't.
 
I don't know if it's still there but there was a really nice French restaurant in North Lake Tahoe right on the water. In fact, if you had a table at the window, you were actually over the water. Great food, but very rich and pricy. And rich food at that high altitude don't mix. While the dinner was great, my car turned into a methane wagon on the way back to the hotel. Good thing I didn't light a match.
 
Many thanks for all of the information. Dit the Dixie tour boat out of Zepher on Monday. Very enjoyable ride. Was a bit dissapointed in Emerald Bay. We were expecting to see many fine mansions on he hillside. Drove up to Virginia City yesterday. Thewives did not like the road to there. A most enjoyable day, though somewhat expensive. Our wives had fun just buying!!!

George, you should see Emerald Bay from the water! Going in by boat is quite an experience! I spent a night anchored there one time. No other boats were there and it was a great night with a zillion stars reflecting on the water. I felt like we were the only folks in the world that night!
 
Oh heck, Geo. Just got back from Reno/Sparks. Had to pick up a couple a old farts so they wouldn't miss an important vote at our club. I coulda' shown you how not to gamble.:D

Iwas there on the water. On the paddle boat Dixie. Probably different if you there on private boat.

On Thursday we did the drive around the entire lake. The view from the overlook above Emrald Bay was spectacular. I got many good pictures there.

Back home now and glad to be back in my own bed.
