So this morning I decide to take the gf and my mother for breakfast on the small boat. We ended up going to Crabby Amys in seaford

The ride there was good, coming home was a nightmare. It could have been worse though..

I leave crabby amys, and head south run under wantagh 1 bridge, clear the bridge, get back up on plane, and now I am heading towards wantagh 2, Im half way towards Wantagh 2 when a 40plus foot searay is approaching me, bow way up stern is a diggin making a huge wake. Hes about 100 yards infront of me.

At this point the channel narrows, and anyone who knows that area knows if you step 1 foot outside the markers you are grounded. Well, the searay starts coming closer and closer to my side of the channel, to the point where we are closing in and its too late for me to go infront of him and pass where there is more room.

I could have done that, but I couldnt see if there was anyone to his starboard side..By the time we are passing eachother hes 15 feet of my port side, I turn slightly to starboard to ease the slamming my boat and passengers are about to take when WHAM. My boat stops dead in its tracks. IM GROUNDED. I hit so hard I broke a blade off my prop and the tilt and trim are all f-ed up.

I order the gf and my mother to the bow of the boat to help raise the stern, while I slowly crawl off the sandbar.

Everything is good, Im sitting in the channel with the motor on, I take the cover off make sure everything is good, the motor is pissing so I figured im good to crawl home..

Im putting along at 7knots, and I approach wantagh 2 bridge. There is a guy in a 30 plus foot fishing boat coming at me certainly not doing 5mph. Hes doing about 12-14mph, throwing a huge wake. He clears the bridge (as I am approaching it), Now I have both hands in the air signaling him to slow down slow down slow down. The guy flips me the finger and screams "F you, I already cleared the bridge" and goes right up on plane, not even 50feet from the bridge.

Now I have to deal with this guys wake. At this point there is nothing I can do to avoid it. I hit the wake head on and probably took on 50 gallons of water, soaked my gf and my mother.

By the time I got done being tossed around I couldnt even read the name of his boat to call the constables. It was a blue hull Tiara..

Finally crawl home, dock the boat and call it a day. Ill haul the boat during the week and see what damage is done..

GF and mother are OK, my mother who has been boating for over 30 years said she has NEVER seen anything like what we just experienced. My GF on the other hand told me she got turned on by how I handled the situations lol..Gotta love that

Whats the saying? A bad day on the water is better then a good day at work??

5 blasts may have helped forcing the guy to pay attention. Crossing over to the other side is very risky...

I hate Sundays on the water. It is better the closer you get to sunset, but from about 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM it is insane. Lot's of drunks and people with bigger checkbooks than brains out there. That's one of the reasons why I wait to get back to the dock to enjoy a cocktail. That, and docking the boat with a cocktail or two in me wouldn't be pretty.
Saturdays aren't as bad, but can still get crazy.

I hear them from my dock too. I've found that Saturdays really aren't too bad, but I hate going out on Sundays. If I do plan to go out on a Sunday it is usually to so some fishing and I'm back at the dock by 10:00 or 11:00.
I like to take a little pleasure cruise on Sunday evenings when the traffic has leveled off.

Isn't the 40+ foot Saeray liable for damaged caused by his wake? Did you get his name or numbers?

Yes, he liable for damage. I was unable to get his name or numbers. I was too busy trying to keep my boat under control during his 5-6 wake

I hauled the boat out yesterday, and I brought it to my mechanic. The lower unit is working, but the skeg got ripped off, a blade on the prop was ripped off. Tilt and trim is no longer working, one cylinder within the trim unit, cracked and no longer works. The transom looks to be ok.

Im going to replace the lower unit with one that I have (have a complete parts motor), along with the tilt and trim.

Looking at about $800 worth of work in swapping parts out. I could do it myself, but it will never get done.

Sorry to hear that... Grounding and taking a sizeable section off one of the blades has been a recurring nightmare for me since I got into boating. Lucky for me it only happened in reality once on my first boat 20 something years ago, but I still have that dream. I hope it is not as bad as you think it is.

Ive been boating for about 20 years now. Never have I experienced a large boat running on plane throwing a huge wake in such tight quarters. The other captain should have known better.

People have money and can buy boats, doesnt mean that common sense or the know how to use them will factor in...

That goes without saying lol..Usually I am on the listening end lol

Some years ago I had a big sportfish blow by me on the way to the Anna Maria bridge in FL. Why he was in such an all-fired hurry I don't know as the bridge was closed and he had to wait. Being a lot lower than he was I simply cruised under the closed bridge ahead of him. That must have really upset him as once the bridge finally opened he blasted through and waked me AGAIN. I saw him coming though and was prepared.

The world is full of them...

I cross paths with these water plows all the time. They just sit up on the bridge and run right by you like you aren't even there. I still think they need to give a test and issue a license like they do to drive a car. As much as I'd hate to provide big brother with another way to tax us, I think it would be worth the money for the license to know that at least someone checked these idiots out before they tossed them the keys to one of these monsters.

CaptC......Thats how the Great South Bay is every weekend !!! :)

John, I think that a boat operating license would no more make people operate their boats more safely than a driver's license does for a car on the hard.

Gerry

Yes, but a water test would show that you know how to operate a boat. A boat is much more of a weapon then a car is..

Car, you have brakes, boat, none...

Car, you put it in park and leave it, boat, nope you have to tie up make sure she is secure before leaving.

Car, one engine, boat up to three engines..

A boat takes much more know how

Matt,
Im glad one person reads my rants !

I dont think boat lic would help . Local govt would just be in it for the money.

EDUCATE boat buyers and have some real enforcement of laws already on the books.
