although my boat is all fiberglass, the transom door is apparently made of aluminum. i don't think it's been repainted or maintained in any way over the years and now the paint is flaking off it pretty badly. i removed the door the other day and brought it to an auto shop to see what they would charge to strip, prime and repaint it. i was quoted a price of $200, which is much more than i expected. what's worse is that the owner said the paint is flaking because the aluminum is starting to corrode from the inside out. he said he could not guarantee the paint would last for more than one or two seasons. has anyone else had this problem? if so, what did you do to resolve it? btw, the boat spent it's entire life in salt water. the first 11 years were in the pacific northwest and last season on the east coast.

I wish I could help you, Bruce...we just don't have that problem up here on Lake Erie

At $200, you better drop that door off and be glad it didn't cost more. Paint is EXTREMELY expensive, not to mention the labor involved in stripping, prepping, and priming. Don't let size fool you too much. It involves relatively the same amount of work to do a small project like that than it is to do something twice that size.

As far as the expense of paint, my father is halfway through doing a full restoration on a 1954 corvette. He has over $2500 just in the paint. That does not include the body shops labor, just the actual paint. Modern paint is slightly less expensive, but not by much.

If you want to save a little, not a whole lot, prep it yourself and ask them to hang on to it till they get someone else's project in with the same color.

Zinc Chromate should be the primer of choice before painting aluminum.

i was expecting a price of $100. $200 is not out of the question, but i would want it to last for a while. i'm not sure whether having it painted, powdercoated or anodized (or anodized and painted) would last the longest.
