Trojan 440 Upgrades, Fixes and Ideas

Not easy to get a shot of the drain, but is just bent ss sheetmetal from the edge of the cutout down to the ss chanel for the chain roler. Caulked in place and some foam stripps around the opening to chanel the water to it. As you can see I sdded a roler so the chain dont drag. I have weep holes in the chain locker. On the garage lidd I put weather stripping on the back of the upper part and some foam door weather stripping on the back edge of the main lidd, it helps. Homedepot, comes brown or white.

I am making progress. I have the waste lines in the cabin replaced. Still need to do the pump out line and the vent line.

I still used small sections of hose to make the final connections to the vacuflush

15 years of ?? It does wash off pretty easy though.

Oddly enough, through all of this, once the hoses were removed from the cabin it did not smell.

The run from the engine room bilge to the hole in front of the tank is 8.5 feet. The opening just in front of the tank is the only place I can see it. At least not without removing the fuel tanks. What has been obvious from the start of this project is that they never thought of what to do in the event it needs replacing. In order to put pipe in I have to run it from the engine room bilge. That bilge is 9 feet long. So it will require removal of the batteries which are in the way of putting pipe in. After that it is a piece of cake.

The next couple of weekends my card is full of other stuff so I have time to rest my arms up before going at it some more.

I have two hoses run through that area being I have two tanks and both of them will be a bitch to replace! My batteries are on the other side of my port motor so the entire center is open which should help but it is still going to be a major pita.

I would connect the two tanks with a y and then one line through the black hole. Speaking of tanks. My waste tank is an inch wider than the hole. Only way it is ever coming out is with a saw.

Looking good! let me know how you make out with replacing the centerline hose I'm not looking forward to this I expect that to be the hardest part!

I was going to do that today but it was just to cold. If my batteries were not in the way it would not be that hard, IMO. Having to pull two 8d batts and unbolt the boxes, cables and all that. Yanking it out will be easy once everything is out of the way.

I was looking in my anchor locker today as well trying to determine where the water goes from there. I figured there was a overboard drain or something. I couldn't find anything except an approx 3/4 inch drain into the center bilge. That explains were the rain water comes from. I plan to connect a hose to discharge side in the bilge and from there to my shower sump so it pumps overboard. I am also going to use odvars example above to keep most of it out in the firs place.

One other thing I did today was the vent line it was a flexible line that had an inside diameter about the size of a bic pen. It is now rigid 3/4" PVC. Should improve the venting dramatically. There is no filter on it now either.

My concern is getting the old hose out and being able to line up the new pipe in the holes they are real tight and the old hose looks like it has been silicone in place.
I installed vent filter(s) in the anchor locker fits perfect there and took all of ten minutes to install each. Being I have two tanks I have two vents and two filters as well.
If your hose pulls out fairly easily I will try to do mine as well. I really can't combine the two tanks I have a Y valve in the engine room to switch between tanks when I pump out. If I were to combine them it would only pump until one of the tanks was empty and then it would suck air and I would loose pressure.

Having to go into the engine room each pump out and select which tank to empty would suck. Pun intended. Looking at the photo you posted, it seems you could turn the aft tank 180* and connect the two discharge ports together with a straight piece of PVC. You can then put a T in the middle and run one waste line. You would also have to put a 1 3/4" hole in the bulkhead between them but that would be easy. As for putting the new line through there, the engine room bulkhead is the only one you have to pass through. As you may have noticed, the others do not go to the very bottom of the bilge. Have you ever measured your tanks. They look to be the same size as my waste tank. 23x23x36. That is about 84 gallons(divide the measurement in inches by 231). Per tank. Maybe you really only need one and you can have the rest of the center bilge for storage.

What kind of flooring is that? Is it glued down? If not, does it move around?

Mike, it is a redwood that is screwed down to a plastic backing raising it up off the floor. It is a 1 foot square that hooks into each other. I bought it at IKEA.

I just cut it to fit the space. It was trickier than I thought it would be and does not look to bad. I numbered the connection points on the back sides so when I take it out to clean I can figure out how to put it back in.

In the guest head I just used 4 squares and did not try to make it fit. It does not move much even before I went wall to wall with it.

The flooring looks nice for the head, however once you get drop of urine in between the cracks that is going to be a nightmare to clean.
If I ever plan to add anything to my head floor it would be something that is solid and impervious to water, urine and common dust as it becomes a bitch to clean. The only other solution would be a solid mat that could be taken out when it needs to be cleaned. I learned this from my other boat. Looks good though.

Actually, it is not that hard to pick up for cleaning. But I do agree with Dave. Personally, on the boat I prefer not to stand to do that for that reason, unless I am peeing off the stern. LOL

John love what you are doing, love your Saloon floors, I chose a lighter color because I thought it will get too dark in there but I think you chose we'll. is the floor done? On the edges next to the couch we simply un screws the couch from the floor and installed the vinyl planks under the couch then lowered the couch again on the planks. Saved a lot of cutting edges and crazy work.

I thought about doing that Allen but my flooring is a 1/4" a the sub-floor the same. I will likely lift it though and do that so I can trace the lines I need to cut. I do like the trim you put on yours. I was not planning to put any on mine. That will leave a 1/8" - 1/4" gap around each hatch unless I just cut the interlocking edge off on the sides.

As for being done, I am not even close. I am replacing the waste lines (including vent), and I may replace the water line as well. I also think I am going to run PVC from the wash down pump in the engine room to the anchor locker. Then, since I now have access to the bilge areas that have not seen the light of day since 1996, I am going to clean and paint them. I also have removed the w/d and plan to line that with cedar for linen storage. Lastly the finish on the windows around the ports needs reifinished so I am doing that too. I want to have that work finished before I lay the floor so I don't screw the floor up. The photos on the previous page are where I am at now. I am not able to work on it this weekend or next but will be out there on the three day weekend following. A couple weeks after that I should be able to dewinterize the water system and lay in the sub floor. So the floor probably won't be finished until the end of Feb. Just in time to start the season.

If Trojan was still around we could all get a job and built the perfect boat!!!
I moved the fresh water pump from the guest state room to the engine room, too noisy, don't think I need to do my waste hoses yet as the boat was rarely used. Extended the fresh water hoses from the guest state room to the anchor room so I now I have running water there to wash the anchor room.
Lifting the couch to trace the lines is a great idea as well. Sound like you are going to have a long busy winter. Enjoy! Keep us updated, love seeing all these upgrades and changes. :-)

I guess I'm going to have to start some projects as well:) The only think on my list is the waste lines and replace the name the old one has faded.

Dave - Replacing the waste lines was all I was going to do. I really did not intend to do the water lines or even make the outboard bilges accessible. It was sort of a well, since I am down here, I might as well thing.
