Trojan 440 Upgrades, Fixes and Ideas

Welcome Todd no need to thank me I was happy to help sorry for any confusion but glad this is behind you now.
I'm looking forward to seeing pictures and hearing your plans.

Just trying to figure out how to post pictures, when I get there I will post them. I think this will be a fun trip because right now I have the boat totally gutted and next week the new headliner and wall liners go in and yesterday I just hired the cabinet guy so I hope to move along fairly fast on this. Thanks again!

Todd you need to setup an account with photobucket and unload the pictures to that site then you just use the IMG link to post them here you will get the hang of this it's not hard but if you need help or if you just want to post a few pictures quickly email them to me and I will post them for you.

When you post pix from photobucket, you have to delete everything except the URL in between the

Welcome aboard Todd. Can't wait to see what you are doing. If you need info on things this is definitely the place.

Welcome Todd, very excited to have another 440 owner.

On another note I am happy to report that my RPM gauges is finally fixed after 3 years. It was the engine "pulse" data in the gauge that was wrong. apparently the engine pulse is the number of teeth on the engine flywheel which for the cummins 450 is 127. it took lots of hours to figure out as cummins have no idea what engine pulse is. My friend Steve was able to figure it out.

I'm glad this mystery is solved! I have been concerned about this for a while.

For cats the number of teeth on the flywheel is in the service manual I believe. Or the parts manual. I know I read it in one or the other.

I needed Steve to figure it out :-) on the Tach manual they talk about "pulse" which is probably a European term, in the engine manual when you read about the way the sensor is working it is RPM, the way it count the RPM is by counting the teeth. Called cummins to ask the amount of teeth they knew immediately, what was the engine pulse the had no idea.

In addition what ever happened when we loosened up the bolts that holds the port rudder last year it worked. Dave was helping me taking apart the rudder when at some point it looked completely lose, we didn't need to remove it or fix anything just to mount the bolts again this year. the steering is much better now.

I started to play around with a pump today to keep the bilge dry. As we all know the pumps are mounted on a platform preventing the pump from getting all the water out. I have considered spending a lot of money and buying an Arid dry bilge system but I plan to experiment a little first I bought a few cheap pumps on line and I picked up a some tubing. I plan to mount a pickup tube in each of the bilge areas and where they are close to the sump pumps I will just pump them into the the boxes and let the sump pump the water over board. I the rear I haven't decided what I'm going to do as of yet. I may install check valves on the bilge pumps and tap these in after the valve. I setup a test unit in my garage at home and I was impressed with how well it worked these are self priming pumps that can run dry it did a good job of pumping a bowl dry seemed to even get the last drop.

China made from ebay $13 each the pumps are not as big a deal as the pickup tubes and what you do with the output. It this works out I can always replace the pumps with something better but at the moment this cheap units look like they will do the job. I will show you tomorrow.

welcome Todd.
Did I see that you have QSM 635hp? that's what I got in mine, Great engines and they move the boat very nicely. Looking forward to hear more about your boat.

Bob what about the name or details on the garage lip seal? I have been using some door seals that has worked good but always looking for somthing better.

It's amazing that boats that cost almost a 1/2 million dollars when new, need so many upgrades and fixes...

Well that didn't work, guess I better wait till I get on the laptop instead of using my phone.

Ok I see it didn't work. I type first then I selected the little picture which gave me the two imgs. Then I copied the second line down on photobucket that said direct. Then I placed it in between the imgs on the forum and pasted it.

Also so I don't bother you guys will I know if I got it to work when I push preview or does it have to be submitted for me to see the picture. Thanjs Todd
