Weekend weather

I'll be running in NY Harbor today and tomorrow...Not my idea of fun! You can get some really big rollers in some of the open water areas. Last thursday was not as bad as today and three pax puked in the cabin! we'll see what today brings. We may see a snowy mix on sun/mon!

For those of us living on or relatively close to the water, The discomforting thing about this statement is the fact that it will be happening on the highest natural tide day of the year!

Thats got my attention!!!
 
Sorry. It is actually my fault.

Boat came out of the shed yesterday (all detailed) and went into the water. That pretty much guaranteed some crappy weather almost immediately.

From the latest report, this N/E storm could be worse than originally expected, especially with the predicted high tides. Need to have lines adjusted for winds and high tide, then for the tide going out which could be low low, that’s always a fun balancing act.

Remember last fall when we went from way high to a very low in one or two days. It was very strange.
 
Hey all!

This storm is beginning to worry me quite a bit. I'm one of only a few boats that are in the water now at my marina. I have a 8'6" beam, and i'm in a slip of about 10 or so feet. I have a pilling on one side, and a finger on the other. I usually tie to the finger with a spring line, and two lines criss-crossing the stern to the dock. It is a floating dock. Would it be my best best to suspend the boat in the middle, rather than hugging the finger with fenders? Since, there are very few boats in the water, on the opposite side of the dock, there are slips that have both poles and fingers and they are about 14-16' wide. Would it make more sense for me to occupy one of these slips and tie myself right in the middle, so there's no danger of hitting the fingers? I went out last year and purchased 5/8" double braid lines, so I have MORE than enough holding power for a 22' 5,000lbs boat. I plan on purchasing a few more heavy duty fenders before the storm. Your suggestions are all welcome and appreciated!

For a boat that size, I'd rent a trailer and pull it out for 3 or 4 days. Why take a chance?

Dan, sounds like your boat will get bounced around like crazy. If you can pull it out, that is the best idea.

If not, I would go for tieing it in the larger slip away from the docks.

Dan, What kind of boat do you have? Is it self bailing or do you have to rely on a bildge pump to pump out rain water? How about canvas? don't forget to address that issue. You mentioned that there are few boats occupying the marina, maybe you could find the most protected from the wind and open water and move there temporally. Good luck and let us know how you weathered the storm!

Can someone on South Shore around Lindy keep us posted as to the flooding?
Don? John? Barb? Someone on a canal?
I am still high and dry and it would have to flood bad to float me.
Still don't want to lose my dock box or gril, those could float if it comes over alot.

Up here on the North Shore, nothing bad to speak of. Normal rain, not heavy, ground is absorbing it.

Right now ....it's high tide....all looks normal. Going out now to set my fender board for tonights high tide.
 
Just came back from the boat-now in Huntington
There is not even a ripple across the Bay – it’s like glass
But still waiting for all He!! To break lose
I have 8 lines to 5 cleats on the boat – I should be ok as long as the high tide doesn’t lift the docks over the piling
 
Now I'm glad I didn't rush to get in! Was able to bottom paint the bowrider yesterday and now just waiting for the crane to come and launch it. Didn't have time to wax yesterday so might have to do a rush job or do it in the water. Waiting for the mechanic to take the Trophy, bottom paint it and launch. At least that's on a trailer so I'm not at the mercy of the hauler.
