Wow, clear skies, sunny 80's, it doesn't get much better than that!

We ended in Bowline, along with at least 100 other boats, it was a MOB scene, we rafted 10 boats closest to the north shore, behind us was a raft-up of 14 - 17 boats from Haverstraw, behind them was a raft-up of about 20 boats, and scattered raft-ups of 3 - 6 boats were all over the place.

The bane of Bowline, getting your anchor to hold, was evident all weekend. The two rafts behind us had problems all day Sunday, almost drifting into one another. Other rafts were seen drifting across the pond.

We held fine until about 2AM when our stern anchors stopped holding. We tried for an hour to re-set, with no luck, so at 3 AM, we broke up and headed back to PBM, I towed my dink, my son drove our jet boat, and others either towed or drove their jet skies back.

As soon as we got into the river - BTW, it ain't fun pulling out of Bowline at 3 AM with no moonlight, trying to navigate the channel - the water was like glass. Back at the marina, there was no wind! We were all safe back in our slips by 4 AM.

The lesson is to try to get a good bite on your anchor, but NEVER believe you won't drag - it can happen to anyone, at anytime!

It really was a beautiful weekend Mike, I don't think I have seen one better. I spent a good amount of time on the boat although my Sunday got cut short by am on going shore power issue. Had problem checked a number of times but nothing was found...finally figured it had to be a bad switch on the panel....that was the easy part. Did not know how to fix so turned the batteries off and called it a day. Monday morning mrmal with his knack for fixing everything came by and switched the power switchto the spare generator one and I was back in business. Thanks Joe!!! You've bailed me out again.

That single fact of bowline is why I dislike that place when compared to Croton, both north and south side are better choices. Bowline's bottom just sucks for holding anything bigger than my dink! Can it be done, sure but as Mike said you just never know when things are gonna let go.

I bet if the chicken place stopped delivering wings to Bowline we could get Mike back to the south side of Croton on a north wind!

What kind of anchors were you using? I guess the bottom is all mud?

Hi Tensile Danforth on the bow, Fortress FX 11 on the stern. The problem is that the bottom is bowl shaped and with the tidal changes and winds, anchors tend to work themselves free.

So not only is it a bit tricky to get into, the anchor situation can be quite perilous as well.

John, the problem with South Croton is that there is absolutely nothing to keep the kids occupied.

I love the view of the bridge at night from south Croton. They can swim, take a dinghy trip up the Croton river, dink in and raid a cabin or 2 or even visit the prison! :)

Sure its shallow so swimming at low tide is not as fun as north Croton but still things to do.

Just to add to the Bowline conditions the bottom is clay and I have seen anchors set deep in the clay simply pull a large chunk of the bottom in one piece with the anchor still set in the chunk of clay. Lots of extra scope needed there.

How about the plow anchors? Anyone have luck with those there?

I have a 35# plow. Works fairly well but it did pull an entire plug of ground up once. The chain was still embedded in the large block of clay. Earlier this year I was in Bowline rafted with Robyns Nest. Pretty nasty north winds all night long and we held fine on my anchor. But as Mike said the bowl effect and changing winds/tides will cause anything to work free and release given enough time.

Thanks John. We have one of those also and I was curious if there was any particular style that worked better there. Plows are supposed to hold better in all types of bottom from what I've gathered. I can see how a wind shift would swing the boats around and pull any anchor deeper/out of the bottom.

Nice pics. I am the 4th boat from the left on the Haverstraw Raft up grows pic.

Was a very good weekend. Some friends broke free in North Croton on Sunday night as well when the winds picked up.

Wow, breaking loose in North Croton is almost unheard of! You should have come over to say "hello"

I was going to then I got drunk. Then the jet boat was being used. Good night though. Except for the snoring guest. Did you guys here that? Sounded like a wood shop in my boat.

I was anchored with two other boats in North Croton on Sunday night. About 12:30 am I looked up and saw a raft of about 5 or six pretty big boats in front of me that werent there before. After a quick check to make sure we hadnt slipped anchor, I realized that this large raft had broken free. I blasted my horn and shined my spotlight on them. This woke up the folks on the raft and they realized they had broken free. After a few anxious moments, they got one boat started up and moved the entire raft to a safer location where they finally were able to anchor. I heard someone yelling "I told you we should have had more anchors out" What and understatement!

All ended well but it could have been disasterous.

Good catch Dave!

Would not have been a good way to end the season.

My big disaster of the weekend was sitting at the pool at the Channel Club, opening the cooler only to find that there was no more beer!

Dave..nice catch ! I know if I was there I would have been sleeping. The weekend was great for boating and even better if no one have any problems.

Hey Hogan... where are all the fun people in your pic's !!!
