When does Watch Hill marina open?

Rob
The only issue I really have with the group reservation thing is nobody said anything about the group reservation program, it just SHOWED UP. I am positive more boating groups would love to have the privilege of making group reservations, but knew nothing about that option. It almost appears as if it was done by design behind closed doors and just popped up. As of now your correct most, if not all the group reservation time slots have been durning the "off season". My concern is what will happen if at some point in time that changes and the so called prime time part of the season becomes available to group reservations, will we even know about it, or will it also just pop up? I know at one point there was talk of seasonal slips, what happened to that? Will we show up one spring and find that a number of slips have been rented for the season? Please don't get me wrong, any or all of these above issues may be the best thing for Watch Hill, but you have to question the way in which things happen there.

One other issue I have is what happened to the flow of information about this group reservation system between the Park Service, the concession owner, and The Friends of Watch Hill? Somewhere that line of communication broke down before it got to us the people that support Watch Hill. Why didn't the Friends of Watch Hill make this policy change known to it's members? As mentioned in my earlier post I am not as high on the Friends of Watch Hill as most people are as they appear not to be acting in everyone's best interest. That is why I have not renewed my membership the past few years. They posted on their web site everything about the improvements being done with the docks and restaurant, what happened to this group reservation change? Even if you go to the concession web site the only mention of reservations is same day only.

I hope now you see my point, I don't want to make this a us vs them situation. All I am looking for is that everyone is treated the same and we are made aware of any upcoming changes before they are just placed in effect.

My 2cents…..

Rob, Don… Well put……

Totally agree with the new policies, even the bending of rules a bit to accommodate boating functions early and late in the season as long as it does not take away from the general boating community.

About a bit of extra noise…… well guilty as charged…….

I do understand, some of Aqua Office’s points that some boaters may want to enjoy some quiet time early morning and later at night. But, let’s face it, we are all there to have a good time and the majority of boaters will party hearty, then cool it around 10:00-11:00. Some may not, but I don’t think anyone should be the judge and jury, that’s up to the Rangers if they deem it is beyond acceptable. The reason it seems that the FOWH are more the guilty ones is because there are more members than people realize and tend to group up.

FOWH put a lot of effort into that place that many boaters don’t even know how stuff gets done. So what if they get cut some slack. I was a platinum member of the FOWH, although I did not do hands on work or attend meetings; I did know my $100 bucks was going towards something good for all of us.

Seemed that Radio Waves was the boat that many in our LIYC group partied behind. A few times I was asked / told to tone it down by other boaters, it was maybe 9:00PM, but I would turn it down a notch, just to show good intentions. We try to respect our fellow boaters that may not be as hard core, but sometimes the groove takes over and you forget.

A couple of years ago on “A” land, I was playing some tunes and our picnic bench was port down a couple of boats that was part of our group. My starboard side neighbor told me to shut off my radio since I was not “on” my boat. Ok seemed fair, I know people don’t like that, so I did. Later we gathered behind my boat and I turned on my music well before the quiet time. He came out and began complaining about everything we were doing. A couple of my buddies did not take kindly to it. Things could have gotten messy, but did stop short before.

Boaters policing Boaters when there have been adult beverages consumed is a bad mix.

Brad

I don't mean to insult you, but I have docked next to you, and beside the radio being a little load during the day, you a church mouse compared to what goes on the the west side of Watch Hill at night.

Based on what the responses are it seems people feel I'm upset because I wasn't invited to party until the sun comes up, or just an old fool for even bring it up. The only thing I ask is if you know someone that docks on the west side (C-D dock) ask them how load it is there past 11PM. The dock where the Friends of Watch Hill board members dock.

With that said I am starting to know how Chill Pill felt once he mentioned his discomfort about how things are run at Watch Hill

Aqua Office, I am insulted with you saying we are has-been partiers. Just Kidding !!! :--)

I understand your issues as I stated before. My point was that the Rangers should be the ones to do the enforcing deed so other boaters don’t need to put themselves in an awkward position telling other boaters to cool it. Also, IMHO boaters should try to be somewhat tolerant of the late nighter’s within reason, but after midnight is really pushing it and 2-4am is ridiculous.

Actually I believe the quiet time is 10PM-7AM, so I am not sure what the final answer should be about when enough is enough, 10PM maybe a fair time, but I think bit early. However, later than midnight making unnecessary loud noise should be restricted. But the Rangers are most likely sleeping dreaming of old Smokey the Bear.

Anyway, hopefully we have a good summer and safe boating wishes to all, even the noisy ones…...

Brad,
The last thing u want is the rangers involved. The concessionaire should keep everyone in line. EVERYONE ... no exceptions ... Courtesy is always expected from boaters.

My thing with chill and aqua was only the post and preseason stuff...

But like i said when rangers get involved its bad for all of us .... WE dont need more rules... And the ahole and they are a ahole that wrote the park serivce should be adult enough to say hey guys ... im the the guy .... and this is why i did it ...

Rob

Rob, good point… I didn’t realize it was the concession staff’s job to do this. I agree, better them than the Rangers. The reason I mentioned Rangers is because about 3 years ago, a captained booze cruise boat full of LIYC’ers came to crash our group as a joke, they came late and of course behind my boat. The Rangers came a running and I got a wrist slap, but we made nice in the end, especially since they found out I was already a sleep when the dock crashers came a knocking. Ok, maybe not sleeping…. I loved it when one of the rookies told a big shot from our club about having courtesy.

I missed something from a previous post, you are saying someone and maybe an RO wrote the parks department about the past event?

Time to set the record straight. I QUESTIONED reserving the ENTIRE marina as originally stated. Since that time, we have come to find out this was not the case.

I did ask the park service whether or not the marina was closed to the general public on this date. That's all I said!! I make no apologies about that. In fact, it was even recommended by Don (DD). Who else should I have questioned? Nobody answers the Watch Hill phone and there is no email contact information on the fire island concessions website.

I received a nice reply back from the park service. The rules have been changed and the website has yet to be updated to reflect the changes. However, nobody is allowed to reserve the ENTIRE marina. My question was addressed and I have accepted that.

I am not going to resort to name calling or bashing anyone. I had a question and I have a right to an answer.

This site can be a wealth of positive, helpful information. However, sometimes statements get blown way out of proportion and that helps no one. That's a shame!

dave,

would you mind posting what the new rules are, as they were explained to you?

thanks,
jim

UR CALL to the park serivce set an entire claustia Frb2rb2@gr5tgr5t#k into motion... people in the park serivce that didnt know anything about the event started getting involved and it created alot heart ache for everyone.... THE KICKER is u didnt even go... I Think u had no intention of going to watch hill for this weekend but just wanted to try and stir something .... otherwise why would u even call? DAVE is ur boat even in the water ?

This is what pissed me off... Then U dont even GO... SO YOU yes YOU created an entire **** storm for NOTHING .... Just thought ud want to know... so thats why people ( ME ) are alittle pissed... So now that i think we cleared it all up.... I think we just bury it ...

How dare you for blasting Dave for asking what the rules are???? Doesn't the fact that even people at the Park Service didn't even know what was going on bother you???

I don't think Dave or I have a problem with advanced group reservation durning the "off season" as long as everyone knows what the rules are, and it's open to all groups. I for one would like to see it limited to "not for profit groups" but that's just me. My concern what would happen if a dealer wants to bring some boats over and place them in slips to have a mini boat show. Yes reaching somewhat but that's why everything should be out in the open.

Please remember when Mr G had the concession rules changed on a whim and that's what set people off. Watch Hill is not a private park, that's why everything should be announced in advance and then some feed back from the people that go there. After that they will do what they want to do, but at least everyone knows what's going on.

I find it hard to understand with each of the Friends of Watch Hill, the Park Service, and the concession all having web sites nothing was even mentioned about the group reservation policy.

Dave there is no reason to even explain why you asked what the rules were.

Am i missing something.. The point is its all off season... AND HE OR U WERENT EVEN THERE ....

SO WHAT'S THE FREAKING POINT ?????????? There is none... it didnt effect u ... SO WTF.........

Rob,

Not sure who you are but even your edit accusations and tone come across pretty poorly.

Just so you know, I saw Chill Pill on the water this past weekend.

So.....if he was on the water.....knew it was not a closed event ( because he was in contact with the parks dept )........ why didn't he come ?

Why does that matter, someone posted it was a closed event, Dave called, found out this was not correct and shared the information.

I do not see the problem?

Guys,
First off let it be known that this Dave, is not the same Dave everyone is throwing his name around.
Second off, this is not the purpose of this site, or this forum.
Third off, I am locking this thread, I want this point dropped. We are all adults, we all do things to piss each other off every now and then, lets leave it at that, enjoy boating and bury this hatchet. If you guys want to continue to piss on and off about it, then take it to private email!

Thank you.
