ancorage spots on the hudson river ?

Bowline is a tough place for a raftup to stay put. My anchors on my last 3 boats never draggged at Croton and have dragged at Bowline probably 3/4 of the time we've rafted in there with atleast 4 or 5 boats.

THe bottom in Bowline slopes and that can be the worst scenario for anchoring.

Jon,

Hogan is saying this to try and keep the traffic in Bowline down to a minimum. Reread with that in mind.

Robyns nest , ya know that thought did cross my mind , but it's stll america ain't it? first come first serve is fine with me .chart clearly shows an "Obstn" so even a beginner would use caution or inquire about local knowledge, so i don't see how the nonsense posts help anything , isn't there some place elese to post some of that junk........ he might have a point if he could describe how tuff it is to get in there instead of scareing boats away argueing it's not a cake walk .....best whishes john f

Its not a barge that is the problem. Its the remnants of one of the several dozen homes that where lost when the mud slide occurred. Years ago there used to be an old pot belly wood stove but that has rotted away over the many years since this occurred. The problem with the bottom is as has been mentioned is how the bottom is so hilly, clay and brick bottom. Bowline was actually land with several blocks of houses on it. There was a brick manufacturer on one end who ended up digging to low and water started seeping in and caused the slide. As I mentioned earlier, I grew up on bowline and have seen a lot of things that have changed over the years. Yes it is a great anchorage but it is hazardous to enter. As many times as I have been in and out over the years, I have hit. You also have to worry about the south side as it is also covered with brick. You have to watch the entrance as there are some pilings on the north side. Most of them have been removed but there are still some there. Then once you are in there, if you go towards the fire house you will hit bottom. Yes you can get in, but you should be with someone who knows the area. I have escorted quite a few, and some of them have still hit bottom, both on the south and north side...

Thanks Butch, very informative and well said , i'm sure boaters will take your word for , i know i will keep it in mind thats the kind of stuff a chart can't tell you and i'm sure it's appriceated by all . BTW that was yor boat in the pic wasn't it ? ( hope it floated off OK if it was ) . best whishes.... john f

Jon, you can ask anyone at my marina what a bad boat operator I am, they all run for the fenders and boat poles when they hear me coming.

I can't get in or out of my slip without hitting every boat around me, everytime I go into Bowline I hit the wall.

Robyn's Nest hit the nail on the head.

John, No it was not mine but I cant say I have not hit it. I can say the fellow who hit it did get off with the next high tide. As far as I know, he had very little damage. He was one of the fortunate ones...

Hogan , not trying to make enimies here in fact just the oppsite, i was checking back on my computer cause i like the site so much and thought it was great to find a hrcc ! just went into defense mode for a min. cause i felt like i was bieng attacked , i need to work on reading between the lines a little,so please accept my apology i think i got out of hand & didn't feel any better about it, especially after finding another post of yours saying you weren't feeling well hope you feel better soon i have to admit i do enjoy your posts. Us old marines can get a little defensive sometimes. by the way i should have caught your drift sooner & butch glad to hear it wasn't you gov. once again thanks and look forward to hearing from the hrcc . gota join up and get the pm thing going ....... john

Hey John, how about some caps and maybe tap the enter key a few times so we don't have to read a huge block of run on text????

Spellcheckers are free and work great too.

Sounds good Robyns Nest, i'll give it a try professor. I'm an excavator by trade and am still learning the computer thing thanks

for the tips . As far as spell check well lets not get carried away , but see your point about how hard it is to read i didn't now

how to leave more space , till now. i've got man sized hands and finges and they usually hit more than one key when typing away.

But i'll try to improve all the best jon f.

All's well that ends well!

Now if we could only get you to hit "enter" at the end of paragraphs instead of in the middle of sentences, life would be good!

Thanks guys , Hope this weather keeps up . Then we will all be out there where we belong. - BOATING ! - JON

See you in Bowline, I'll be the guy on the wall!

I see the perfect storm brewing. Now if we can just get Bob to join in.

YOU GUYS CRACK ME-UP !! , Thanks for the laughs. If I don't get hung up myself HOGAN , I will do my best to pull you off buddy.. john f .

Thanks for the offer, John!

Here's a picture of me on the wall, with some fellow boaters:
