Bob, you're getting flamed pretty hard here, but I don't think you're unreasonable for setting goals like this. Boating is all about adventure, and it seems like you want to do it safely and trying hard to get the appropriate local knowledge.
If you're really going to give this a try, here are some more thoughts for you:
1) Consider doing it with another skilled boater first, rather than your family.
2) See if you can find someone in a larger boat to escort you, in case you get into trouble.
3) Make sure your boat insurance covers you for this area.

Yeah, that is what we as experienced Block Island cruisers are trying to give him. Are you familiar with cruising to Block Island? I doubt it, because you would have to be a fool or an idiot to recommend someone take a 21 foot BOWRIDER over there.
We have enough DEATHS in the waters around here, without you convincing someone to risk their family in waters unsuitable for a lake boat. A 21 foot closed bow boat, sailboat or CC would be an entirely different matter. Still very risky, but not downright stupid like with a bowrider. Why not suggest this guy paddle over in a kayak? Makes about as much sense.

The only thing he is trying hard to do is become a statistic. OK, what he really is trying to do is stir up crap as he is a known troll but we still try to answer his questions honestly. Do you really think a rational person would risk the lives of his children in such a reckless manner given the warnings he has received?

I made no such recommendation -- try reading my response again, more carefully this time.
My response commends him for seeking local knowledge. Following that, if he insists on taking the trip anyway, I suggested a few extra precautions that might help him (or at least his family) survive.

Honestly I think this thread has gotten out of control and the answers way over the top. Yes, going to Block I on a 21' bowrider is not recommended, but you guys are starting to make it sound like he's asking about crossing the Atlantic (or sailing up the whole east coast in February on the outside like the other guy). You can see Block from shore on a clear day, and lots of people fish that area in boats in the 20-23' range. If you're aware of the tides and paying close attention to the weather, there shouldn't be any surprises on such a short trip. There are a handful of good replies on why it's not recommended on that type of boat, and what type of conditions you can run into, but did we really need 110 replies going as far as planning the party to watch his rescue and discussing whether or not his kids should go down with him?
I have friends with a lot of boating experience who I've told about boatered, and they see threads like this (and plenty of others lately) and they think most people here are nuts and have no desire to participate. If someone new sees a thread like this do you think they'll want to ask a question about local waters? Seems to me there are fewer and fewer people here joining in on discussions lately.

Guys, facts show that bowriders on the ocean are just about the most dangerous contraption you can find on the water, outranking paddleboards, 14 foot daysailers and pieces of driftwood on that score. Any sort of encouragement to use a bowrider on the open ocean is a mistake in my opinion.
Recall some of those tide rips you have seen on Block Island sound. Now put a semi clueless person who has already admitted he has never been in the open ocean, does not know how to read charts, or likely weather or tide tables...in an overloaded bowrider. "Hey, the kids wanted to ride up front!"
I'd say we have been mild in our comments. In the Know gave him excellent advice to boat around in a big bay, learning to read charts in the process of doing that.

Sure, some RO's were over the top with thier smart-ass replies - big deal, so you think we're "having some fun" at BOB's expense. Bob is a troll - he lives in Pennsylvania for cripe's sake. So tell me, why do you suppose he'd trailer his 21' lake boat the distance to Montauk, NY, with his wife and 2 very young children, to camp out and then challenge unpredictable ocean conditions to BI?
This is what he enjoys doing - making up fictitious topics to obtain the attention he craves from seasoned boaters. Apparently attention he so much lacks in his little life . . . classic troll profile.
