did somebody say watch your wake?

I can walk over to the canal office and ask about Pilot rules.

Here are the general rules http://www.nap.usace.army.mil/sb/C&D_Canal_Rules.pdf but they don't list pilotage rules other than for vessels engaging in foreign trade. It does say you are responsible for your wake but boats also must be tied down well because their will be wakes (paraphrasing)

Thanks for the pictures I had my head in the bilge putting new gaskets in a raw water sea strainer and didn't know what hit me. I'm lucky my engine cover didn't come down and crush me.

Give me a shout next time you're in town.

I must have just missed him. I was there in the afternoon. The no-wake signs are really lacking in this area...he obviously should no it's no-wake by the basin, but a couple of floating red and white no-wake barrels would make a world of difference.

i dont' have the Coast Pilot handy but i'm pretty sure that foreign flagged vessels over 100 Tons need a pilot in the northern Ches. and thru the CD

NY, I think it's required for foreign vessels over 100', except intra harbor movements.

This captain is obviously a menace on water. Word needs to get out about him, so others can watch out for him. Should this be linked to the ATC forum? Not everyone reads all the local forums, and this guy probably goes up and down the entire coast from the northeast to FL and beyond.

I wonder if he also trashed the fuel docks at Schaeffer's across the canal from the basin?

When R'Addiction and his friend caught up to the boat, they said that the wake was high enough to lift them up level with the cockpit. I suppose most of the C&D Canal's infrastructure and rip-rap would handle that, but I wonder about the private docks on the western end and the marina (and resident boats) on the old canal on the eastern end...

I was right in front of Scaeffer's and they seemed to do ok. Sea Doo was on the south side of the channel, so the wake hit the basin a lot harder; and the dock at Schaeffers is fixed, so it seemed from my vantage to handle it ok.

Obviously this guy in a menace - evidenced by not stopping after he was made aware- but the city or state or even marina needs to do some work on the shortage of no wake signs and buoys.

What's the name of the new place they are putting in there alk? I couldn't quite read. Have they got anything in there? I should go over and look but I feel like a nosy nebbie going onto somebody else's project.

Not really sure what they are doing back there, lots of signs on the 213 but I forget what they are calling it(Schaeffer's Village maybe?), fuel dock was open last year, not much else seemed to be going on. This was my first time through the canal this year (and hopefully last- hate that stretch of water from Ches City to Turkey Point), and with all the excitement I didn't really get a chance to see what was going on.

They definitely have a sign up.....hey you're talking about my backyard! :-) I rounded Turkey Point Saturday heading up to Northeast and with the wind/tide/current three of us turned around and said I don't need to go to Northeast that bad.

Wow, this guy blew by me coming up the Delaware Bay from Ocean City, he was actually too fast for me to take a picture. We then stopped at the Chesapeake Inn at 1PM for lunch. Nobody said anything. He through a big rooster tail going down the Delta.

Did anybody question the CG Commander as to why he was not stoped at Cape May when he "blew by" the CG???

The "blew by" is not confirmed as of yet.

The boat appears to be moored at Casey's Marina in Newport, RI at the moment - 41 28.8252N / -71 19.0956W. Anyone in the area?

CSpray ... I got the "blew by" from your post

"My friends were there, untied their boats and chased the boat down: "Sea-Doo for Dad", a 108' Sunseeker. The captain flipped them off and kept going eastbound. After turning southbound into Delaware Bay, he shut off his AIS. (See http://aprs.fi/static/954990382 )Apparently, the USCG were set to board him in Cape May, but he blew by them."

There are plenty of RO's up there, but who knows if they read the Chesapeake and Delaware forum. Given "Sea-Doo for Dad"'s mobility up and down the east coast, it would benefit all of us if this thread was moved to ATC, where it would be more visible to a larger audience.
Les, can it be moved to ATC?

No sweat. Like happens so often, the reports seem to outspeed the confirmations. The person who reported it to me has admitted that it was 3rd-hand...

At my work, we have a recorder set to record the past 8 hours of AIS, radar and 2 different VHF channels.
When we have an incident, we send in the tape to be reviewed by our regulatory affairs group and they
then decide if it needs to go to the USCG.
If there is a port in the area, they should have him on their recording system also. But I don't know if
they would have it for that far back. I know the Port of Lake Charles has radars and cameras set up all
up and down the ship channel for surviellance reasons.
If you have damage to your boat, or a dock, then the USCG should be able to retrieve some information from
the area.

With all the witnesses to this event it is amazing that law enforcement somewhere along the line is not involved. It sounds as though there may have been multiple incidents.

Sounds like it is someone with big money doing whatever they like.

I can only imagine that Bombardier/BRP (parent company of SeaDoo) is appalled by the actions of this yacht. The owner/captain has done an excellent job of dragging their name through the mud in the very market they are trying to serve. Based on their reputation as a stand-up company, and their corporate community statement, he's likely to face a lot more heat from them than law enforcement or even his insurance company. I just can't understand why the authorities are allowing him to run. What happens once he gets out of the US and into Canada? From where he is now, he could be gone by the end of the day...

Do we really know if this guy is a SeaDoo Exec? Just because he has the emblem on the back of the yacht doesn't mean he works for them. As far as I know, there's no law against copying a trademark as long as it is not done for profit.

Hopefully we will find out what happens to this guy. Sounds like he will be open to millions of dollars in civil lawsuits when you factor in both actual and punititve damages. If he's not a SeaDoo Exec, that company may even have grounds for a lawsuit against him in using their name on a boat that has been handled in a reckless manner.

I don't think running to Canada is going to stop that from happening.
