I can walk over to the canal office and ask about Pilot rules.
Here are the general rules http://www.nap.usace.army.mil/sb/C&D_Canal_Rules.pdf but they don't list pilotage rules other than for vessels engaging in foreign trade. It does say you are responsible for your wake but boats also must be tied down well because their will be wakes (paraphrasing)
Thanks for the pictures I had my head in the bilge putting new gaskets in a raw water sea strainer and didn't know what hit me. I'm lucky my engine cover didn't come down and crush me.
