Irene Speeding Toward East Coast

When Floyd hit we were in the most upstream slip of F dock, perpendicular to the current. They had lines from E dock to our midship cleat and lines from E dock to the fuel dock. They almost lost E dock and the poles of the fuel dock were all bent over due to the keel of that Hatt snagging the current.
If this prediction holds up the creek will be moving along.

By the way, the railroad bridge now called "Walkway over the Hudson" was recently examined and found safe for winds up to a robust 80 mph. Yes, only 80....

quote:

Recent engineering studies revealed that portions of the Walkway could safely handle lateral wind loads of 80 mph. All Authority bridges, however, require a 134 mph standard. The trestle originally was constructed with a standard of 100 mph. Reinforcement work shall be scheduled next week, lasting about a year, costing $1.2 million. The Bridge Authority will pick up the tab.

The gang is all here, so here is a shot of the creek. RYB is full and there are a number of heavy hitters;

A new spin on the Rondout. A little worse.

Two days of a steady stream of boat traffic northbound - were can they all be going? I got a bit nervous when the CG started heading north at high speed!

The storm surge has me a bit nervous.

I think a good move would of been to run up the Hudson as far North as possible.
Then as the storm approaches run back down thru it.
If it's moving 12 knots and your moving 20, you will come out of it in a short time and deal with it less.
Plus since your moving how bad can it be!

The river will be loaded with debris so bring spare props.

I was told this morning that RYB has seen those prediction charts in the purple range before without too much of a problem. Flooding yes, but no docks afloat.

After this afternoon I'm more concerned about the larger vessels tied up than smaller ones. If one if those 60 footers breaks loose, roll up a cannon and aim for the hull! They should get out of the creek before the surge and high tide hits. There's going to be a he'll of a lot of water making it's way down the Rondout.

This evening was briefly at Pok. Yacht Club with a friend and there was an 80 footer anchored just west of the channel with several barges anchored just east of the channel. Most every boat at the club was in the water either at the docks or on moorings. Their really exposed there but are expert at securing their docks and moorings -- lots of engineering.

Bill that is correct. We have seen high predictions before. The folks at the Anchorage upstream have been to this well a few times. When they hit the RYB in the past there were no boats in (Spring 2005). I have a couple of photos of the place during the 2005 flood and how our boat was close to floating off the stands. That crest was at 25 feet, and today's prediction has gone up a bit more to 22+ feet.
Fortunately down South the Hudson did not experience a surge that was predicted on the last high tide. Hopefully that is the case later on as well!

Today's spin;

I have been checking the web camera at PBM and at last check it seems to be down I wounder if the internet is down or the power is out in the area. In either case if someone is there it may be hard to respond. (Never mind it's back up and it can see into the future about 15 minute this might come in handy someday. The clock is wrong but I probably always was I just didn't notice. I'm glad to see it back up and working)

Any body have any info as to the conditions in that area?

I woke up to a leak in my living room around a skylight. Of course I recently repainted the ceiling and now I will have to fix the roof and paint again. I can live with this as long as the boat is OK.

Hey...my blue tarp is still holding up. Nobody believed it would hold past eight last night. Time for some extreme kayaking

Ramps to our docks are under water, parking lot and lawn are also flooded. An hour til high tide. Wind should start turning to NW soon, so hopefully it will push the water down the river.

Looks lovely, Mike.... Whatta day, huh...

To make matters worse, TV people are saying stupid things. Someone on Chnnel 7 just said the Hudson was ten feet above flood stage at Poughkeepsie. That is baloney and would be the flood of the MILLENNIUM if true. Its about SIX INCHES over flood stage at Poughkeepsie!!!

Hey Dan, looks like the latest prediction for Rondout is for 22.8' at 8PM this evening. Thats pretty high indeed. Just below the levels of the second great flood (part deux) in 2006. The Anchorage has all the docks lashed together in the hopes they hold up. My dock in particular is longer than others so it will bear the brunt of lots of logs and debris. Will have to get up to Kingston some time tonight if I can. NJ is essentially done with the rain as of 11am. Hoping I can help them out.

WOW.... I never thought I'd ever get to say this, but.... the eye remnants of Tropical Storm Irene have passed directly over Mahopac, NY and after a significant period of calm the winds have backed around and are picking up out of the southwest...
