Marine Sanitation Hose To PVC...

Looks like some long runs without any support, any concerns about that?

Great job, it's on my list. I wouldn't worry about the black lines, who is going to see them once the hatches are closed?

Thanks Hogan.

You would be surprised at the rigidity of the system and there are rubber couplings at the end and middle of the longest runs to handle vibration so I'm not really concerned with support. Nothing moves much at all. I don't remember for sure but I think the longest unsupported length is only 5-6 feet or so.

I will keep an eye on things and if need be I can use some strap hangers but I don't think it's going to be an issue.

BTW - many of those pictures were taken before I was 100% finished. For example in the shots with the thruster I've since added those cable ties to the pipe at each of the stringers. The kind you screw down. That makes sure that section can't move forward or aft.

Typcally PVC is used in a gravity fed design with no pressure or only positive pressure. Is there any concern with the vacuum pressure?

None. After I did the first main section I wanted to test things so I fired up the vacuum pump and let it build full vacuum. I then shut the power off and was away from the project for 2 days. When I came back I turned the power back on and the vacuum pump did NOT come on. It still had full vacuum after 2 days! No leaks there.

I did learn the hard way that anytime you remove a vacuflush toilet you must change the bowl to mounting flange seal AND the brass bolts used to connect the two if they have ANY green on them.

I knew about the gasket but the local store that carries vacuflush parts was closed so I reused the old gasket for testing. I buttoned up the job, reinstalled the removed cabinets etc and the last thing was to pull the head and replace the now purchased gasket.

When you tighten down a vacuflush you need to do it so that the new gasket gets compressed enough for the bowl base to contact the floor 100% around. As I'm snugging up the bolts the last one suddenly pops! :( Damn! I figured I snapped the plastic mounting flange. Now I would have to pull the cabinets again and crawl under to disconnect the pipe so I could replace the flange assembly.

Since it was late in the day I raced over to Penny Bridge since I thought they would have to order a mounting flange kit. To my surprise they had one in stock! (Nice job PB!) I head back to the boat and start removing the head and to my surprise the mounting flange is perfectly fine but it's the bolt itself that had let go. (Seems urine can eat just about anything!)

I'm thinking excellent, there is enough movement in the pipes that I can lift the flange and just replace the old bolts and my problem is solved. I get all 4 bolts in the flange and I'm repositioning the flange over the hole to remount and what do you think happens next?????

Yup, 2 of the bolts fall out, down the hole in the floor into the bilge. The hole is too deep and with the angles there is no way to use a grabber and magnets don't work on brass bolts.... So I have to remove the cabinets and force myself underneath the head floor and use the grabber to try and roll the bolts close enough so I can pick them up. NOT FUN!

As with everything else in this project if you just keep trying things work out. I got the bolts, put everything back together for the hundredth time and the system is working perfectly.

You did good, looks great, definitely and upgrade over the flex hose, do it once and yer done!

Great looking job. I did pick up a couple of tips from the photos as well as some motivation and inspiration. :)

Something very important I forgot to mention. Where the PVC pipe meets the old sanitation hose you will see I used 1 1/2" to 1 1/4" fernco fitting. I do NOT recommend doing that by itself as the sani hose COULD crush when you tighten the clamp. (While not likely it IS possible)

What I did was to get a $3 piece of what is called a sink tail pipe. It is very thin and you can cut 2-3" long pieces that fit perfectly inside the sani pipe and act as a sleeve making it much safer to clamp down hard with the fernco fitting. The tail pipe is thinner than the normal fitting that the flex pipe normally connects to so it adds virtually no restriction and it lets me sleep better at night.

great looking job. 1 question. I'm not a plumber but isn't the black pipe for waste? Why did you use the white pipe?

HI John!

Thi is a great job I like it. But as you mention no straight lines on boats.I have a little suggestion where the PVC touches the fiberglass install a pc of hard rubber under and clamp the pipe.A little vibration is enough to damage the PVC.

John,

Sealand makes pvc adapters to transition between pvc pipe and 1 1/2 sanitation line. That is what I used.

As far as I know PVC pipe comes in any color you want as long as it's white.

They do however carry what is classified as "black water". Perhaps that's what you are referring to.

Gary, thanks for the update.

Did not know they offered such a thing. I'm very comfortable with the solution I came up with thou. I tired pulling the connection apart and nothing doing. I did use a little dawn to make the rubber to rubber connection and even thou lubricated I could not pull the joint apart once the clamp was tightened.

Great looking job! Passing under the galley sink is a true testament of perserverance!

After all that hard work I would suggest using better quality hose clamps, the proper PVC to hose connectors and some lined pipe hold downs for at least a little support.

Great Job John,
Thanks for the education.
I love your projects, you do great work and your very smart.

I agree 100% with clamp replacement and it's on the list but I'm not sure I see the need to replace the fernco fittings.

Anyone have a link to the Sealand fittings? I'd like to check them out. If you have any left Kellyg could you take a picture and send it to me? IIRC Vic said the ferncos are fine to use but if there is something better I'm all ears.

BTW - thanks all for the kind words and suggestions.

Look at the AWAB clamps http://www.awabllc.com/
Just pick up a 7mm nut driver to tighten them with.

I can't recall ever seeing one go bad.

Well, if Vic says so. :-)

I guess I'll have to wait until I get home to view them because here is what I am getting at work.

Yup, they are dirty pictures!!!! Waste is a dirty business :)

Your post just goes to show how wonderful some of these web censor/filters can be.

FWIW - Wake-N-Waves is name of our boat and that is our personal photo gallery site. Not a "bad" thing on there unless you count the few pictures of people in bathing suits enjoying themselves.

Rommer, your description of breaking off the mounting bolts, then dropping the new ones down into an inaccessible bowel of the boat reminds me of the time I was all alone, working on a sailboat. My partner had gone off to the hardware store to pick up a few odds and ends that we needed, but didn't have with us. I was running refrigeration lines in the space between the inside wall and the hull of the boat. And as I reached in, I couldn't quite reach far enough, so I worked my head into the space, trying to increase the reach of my arm.

As fate would have it, I got my head stuck in there. So there I am, with my arm extended as far as it would go, and beginning to ache, and my head stuck, and the rough inside of the hull digging into my head every time I attempted to move it. Nothing seemed to work! The more I tried to move, the more it hurt. I stayed like that for about 45 minutes, angry and feeling completely stupid, until my partner finally came back from the hardware store and very carefully pulled me out, cussing and swearing the whole time.

After the bleeding stopped, and the dizzyness went away, we had a few laughs over a few beers.

Vic,
About 6 years ago, my son was playing in a baseball tournament at some college in the sticks around Coopers Town NY (little league age 16 or so).

We return to the dorm (that's where the kids were staying, college was out and we were using the dorms). So we get in the elevator(way too many people) and it get's stuck between two floors. We were trapped, what was real funny IMHO, was we had parents in the elevator (all men)that were anywhere from grunts, to rich men, we also had our kids (boys with us). After about 60 seconds or so, some of the kids started freaking out, I remember, this one boy in particular. I look around at the parents, and they are at a loss on what to do.

I looked at them and said in my mind, WTF, I aint just standing here like cattle, to make a long story short, I ripped that elevator apart, got the doors open and boosted everyone out (we were between floors).
At dinner that night, I must have gained a new respect for the people we were with, they all thought I was some kind of "super hero", the reality was, I wanted out more than anyone, and was not going to wait.

Your story just reminded me of what it is like to be trapped, sorry for the hijack but I could not resist.

Rommer are you sure did you forget about the "Kitty" porn from about a year ago.

Nice job BTW. I wish I had so much access to everything as you do. I would have to remove carpet and cut out flooring to even consider such a project.
