Need to purchase a new toilet

I promised Wifey that I would change out our older salt water toilet and replace it with a fresh water unit. About 6-7 years ago, I purchased a new fresh water flush Crown from Boatfix. The price then was around $600. Today's price is high enough to make a grown man cry. But no problems so far with the Crown.

So with Crowns being pricey, I though I would learn more about the Sea Era-------that by the way I did not find a BoatFix.

A toilet is a toilet is a toilet is not true! What does the Crown offer that commands $1100 while an Era is less than $500?

Is the higher price for the Crown Raritan's way of focusing on the Sea Era? And yes I understand that nothing lasts forever at the same time though, many things can go belly up in a very short time.

The fresh water Sea Era look very attractive! Can anyone help me with suggestions on this trade off? OH-- will operate from 12vdc.

Thanks--

Can't help much on the others but I have to say I'm very happy having tossed my raw water flush toilet last year in place of a new Raritan Marine Elegance. If I recall the cost was moderate and the installation couldn't have been easier. I'm not the handiest of persons and I did it myself with a little help from another RO. The whole thing is one piece, just plug in the waste and fresh water lines. I opted for the medium of the line control to keep costs down, and while some people seem to prefer the programmable one, I can't see why I'd need it. I have a "flush" button plus an "empty only" and "fill only" buttons. I highly recommend it, but good luck with whatever decision you make!

I vote and can vouch for the Marine Elegance being reliable, uses very little water for normal flushes, it is easy to install and it will chew up a small tree trunk without clogging.

Thanks for the prompt reply!!!

But the Elegance has one shortcoming .........literally! It is only 12 inches high. Doesyour boat have a shelf upon which the toilet is mounted so the height is not a problem? I just showed the outline to Wifey who objects to being a low rider....hope she does not read this post.

That toilet was introduced a few years ago. At that time there weree rumors Raritan would offer the same basic design in a taller package. To date a taller unit does not exist to my knowledge.

That does look a superior design other than the height.

EDIT: WOOPS-- just notice your picture. You do have a shelf

Bill--

Is your Elegance mounted on a shelf?

I just did a Marine Elegance install this winter. They have a tall model 14 inches and standard bowl side. works great!

Yes I do have a raised area where it sits. I also went with the standard bowl size even though it's very big on my boat. You can't quite tell by the pic but it does come forward past the shelf area by quite a bit. But since I hardly ever shower in there, I don't mind.

I also thought they had a taller model but I'm not sure.

I was going to say they make a taller ME model. Mine is on a pedestal that is part of my liner in the bathroom/head. So the standard model height is perfect in my vessel.
My boat also has a stand alone shower so no need to sit on the head when taking showers.

I KNEW I CAME TO THE RIGHT PLACE FOR MY QUESTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THANKS GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Yes, I do see there is a taller unit! Unless somebody give an AWE SHUCKS to this choice, I am going with it!!!

Guys, really--- thanks for your help and advice!

EDIT: OH, and I intend to keep it simple. I see no reason for a complicate flush system.

foggy - I think there's an even simpler controller that is really just a flush button. I went middle of the pack which gives me the option to flush, fill or empty. There's a high end programmable one that some people here swear by. There's also sloped or straight back options. If you contact Vic he'll tell you all about the details, I made sure to get his input before I placed my order.

Just an FYI I have the high end control and purchased one of the 1st units that were sold to the public. Mine has been great. Foggy you might want to search the sanitation section there are numerous positive comments on the ME freshwater head.

Bill--

The Crown that we now have has worked flawlessly since I installed it some 6-7 years ago. It has only a push button to control the flush. And of course, the bowl is never empty but that may be a good thing. NO---- I know very little about these things, about as much as I want to know. An empty bowl has IMHO advantages and disadvantages. Underway it nice to have an empty bowl especially if you have a sailboat....I used to have one as my user name indicates. But does not a completely empty bowl risk getting unpleasant gases from the holding tank or at least the poop distribution pipe/hose?

I will try to search out more info along with trying to get inputs from Vic.

Different topic (hijacking my own thread!) At one time I used to participate often in these forums. I rarely get the chances today, something seems to always get my attention. But WHAT HAPPENED TO VIC????

He was a SUPPER CONTRIBUTOR when he moderated this forum. I wish the guy the best, from my recollection, he did an outstanding job!

Veg-- thank you for sharing info! I was not aware of the sloped vs straight backs.

Now that I am all cranked up, I hope there is enough floor space to accommodate this new toy.

Thanks again guys--

I also put in freshwater conversion, full size bowl, tall ME last year and couldn't be happier. OK I could be happier if I got it attached to a 75 Flemming but for a head it's great. P.S. Vic is back on the board.

Foggy - Note Vic has a thread going that is titled "I'm back!", so that's good news.

Having just purchased the Me, I found there is a tallbay that is 17" & the standard height is 14".

In the empty bowl head there is a rubber hose on the Back of the ME keeps odors from entering the cabin. I believe it keeps some water in the hose and pump.
Also you can do as I normally do not quite empty the bowl using the same control. I leave about 1" of water above the toilets drain.
Either way I have never had odors from the ME.

Mine doesn't really empty completely anyway. Also, the button will empty the bowl as long as you hold it, so you can always decide when to stop.
