SAD............

I was coming out of my canal last night, and right outside the canal is the seaford cut. About a 30 second 5mph zone then youre past it. As I am coming out of my canal I turn towards the channal and this teen is running an older 27ft cruiser probably from the early 80s. kids sitting on the bow pulpit.

My GPS says I am doing 4.6mph, and this boat comes plowing through throwing a huge wake. A few seconds later I go on plane and leave them behind me. I look back, the teen gets the boat up on plane with kids siting on the pulpit without life jackets. That is just plain stupid!

Any Saturday or Sunday, they congregate in the area from the bridges to Jones inlet.

Between guys drifting, guys anchored where they shouldn't and the yahoos crisscrossing all over, you need one hand on the throttles because you are powering up and down so often. Scary stuff out there.

Oh yeah I had another one.
Going thru in the morning end of Lindy Cut, 5 mph zone.
Real slow, down center.
Suddenly a jet ski comes out of the flats there to the right doing about 50 mph.
Makes a sliding turn to the north.
I thought for sure he was going into my cockpit.
Never slowed down once!
I would love to drive around in a unmarked cop boat!
I would bust them all!

I have the winner of all fools:
My kids sail out of a place in Amityville weekdays and race on Wednesday nights. Last wednesday night we took the boat over to watch them. The races were over and I was pulling away from the dock. Some old fool is coming down the canal a little too fast (probably coming from one of the Gin Mills further north)I think he gets pissed off that I pull away from the dock (although there was plenty of room between him and I even at his increased speed), and he nails the throttle, blows by me, and takes off. There was still a good distance to go before the end of the canal and the end of the "No Wake" zone.
When I pulled in my lines he wasn't even in sight. When I put my boat in gear he was probably a couple of hundred feet north of me. By the time I was fully heading south out of the canal he was doing about 4000 RPM and passing me. He looked like he might have had one or two too many.
If I didn't have my wife and kids aboard I might have let my temper get the best of me and made him wish he stayed home that night.
Very unusual thing to happen on a mid week night. Usually that's when the cruising is the most enjoyable.

Two dangerous things... as said, getting between Chuckie and a michrophone! Second, with all the attention BWI and capacity is getting in the media, we still have a bunch of aholes who have no clue on the water. Was running in the channel near the Massapequa Cove over the weekend. Two jetskis and a handful of boaters blow by me at top speed, in the channel, no more than 25 yards from the shore. Amazing.

Nothing really has changed over the years. I am a couple houses from the bay in West Islip, pretty much directly across from Babylon cut. On weekend nights i hear some crazy things coming from the bay..even the occasional scream. I grew up a few houses down and things sounded the same in the 70's. A boy who lived a few streets away was run over and killed by a clam boat waterskiing in the cove. Him and his dad were riding around in a small boat in broad daylight. A friend of the family was running between the pilings of captree bridge (not between the bridges but the pilings of a single bridge!!). He forgot the pilings end and it becomes a wall of concrete. He was killed. My neighbor was toe clamming deep in the flats when he was run over and left for dead by a go fast. Right in front of his wife and kids. He was 20 feet from his boat. He was a big guy. How his wife got him into the boat, called police via radio, and got the boat down to West islip marina by good samaritan hospital is beyonfd me. Another aquaintance was anchored with his girlfriend outside the channel when a water taxi ran them over killing the girl. All those events happened 20 plus years ago...some over 30yrs ago. The bay has always been somewhat dangerous but no worse now than years ago.

Crabs have been great this year. Saturday night i so wanted to go over by the captree bridge w spotlights and load up. i just couldnt do it. Too risky. My dad said same things years ago. Night crabbing only during the week.

Wow. That is quite a roster of scary and sad water stories. Amazing how things don't really change.
